How strange is this
I never had a good dump until I was back on my comfy throne at gfw towers
gfw,
I prefer a balcony but if I have to go inside then I will...

Did you try pressing the vacuum flush while you were still sitting there?

I would never have an inside cabin, would rather not go. We have had a coup[le of mini suites and find it hard to go back to a balcony cabin. Prefer mid ship where possible

lovemybalcomy, we're in a similar boat (excuse the pun).
Our first cruise was our first holiday in ages so we booked a suite and now find ourselves in the unenviable position of being worried about booking anything else in case it leaves us disappointing.

Having just had our first ever cruise sans balcony I certainly did miss it - for several reasons.
1: I like my fresh air, and the temperature in the cabin became quite oppressive at times, and I don't know of any 'ordinary' cabins that have
opening windows
2: I like to sit on the balcony with binoculars and camera and watch the world go by.
3: My OH knows where to find me if I am just sitting out there.

We are cruising from Japan to Sydney in September on the Diamond princess - we have booked a balcony cabin. Can someone tell us what side of the ship is better port or starboard. We want to be able to watch as the ship comes into the ports

Welcome to the forum, Wendy. As you've already booked, it may be too late to be asking this but, if you are on the "wrong" side arriving, you'll be on the "right" side leaving, as the ship will have to turn round. Unless someone who has experience of the particular ports (apart from Sidney, you didn't say which ones you are visiting), you could always have a look at them on Google Earth to see whereabouts the docks are. If it turns out you can't watch the sail-in from your balcony, you can always go up on deck.

Almost had a balcony on next years cruise but cancelled it. I have never got this the cabin one-upmanship, its a room in a floating hotel?
I have yet to see anyone bragging about a sea view room or a garden view in a hotel, so why do people think bragging about a suite etc is of any relevance to anyone ?

Welcome Wendy.
It depends if the ship is left or right hand drive
Personally I don't think it really matters. You may come into port thinking your going to dock with you cabin facing the quayside then the Captain may decide to have the ship facing the other way. Nothing is guaranteed.

It's not bragging Batty. We like a balcony because we enjoy our own little bit of open space. But don't give a fig what cabin anyone else is in. It's their choice like a balcony is ours.Dark Knight wrote:Almost had a balcony on next years cruise but cancelled it. I have never got this the cabin one-upmanship, its a room in a floating hotel?

p.s. we also like a sea view room in a hotel. Living well inland can't see the point in going to the seaside and not seeing as much as possible of the sea.

One chooses one's cabin to suit one's tastes, certainly not to brag about it.Dark Knight wrote:Almost had a balcony on next years cruise but cancelled it. I have never got this the cabin one-upmanship, its a room in a floating hotel?

We had a balcony on our suite in Paphos a couple of years back. It gave us a splendid view across the hotel car park....

We have either a balcony cabin or an outside cabin depending what time of year and where the cruise is. We can't see the point of paying out for a balcony cabin in the middle of winter when it's going to be freezing outside, so an outside suits us fine.

I suppose that is where we all differ
If available, I'd always pay for the upgrade to a sea view in a hotel.
I'd never brag about it as I don't on a balcony cabin.
It really comes down to what you want.
My mate has at least three cruises a year, always at the cheapest possible price (lucky blighter)
I have one, so I want the best that I can afford

Re: What constitutes your choice as being the best cabin and why
Let's be clear on my post shall we, so I am not wrongly accused of loathing all and sundry ( sigh)
I have NO issue with anyone having any sort of cabin , whatsoever, my question or point was why certain people brag about having a suite...simple as that.
I often wonder why on cruise forums people seem to take great delight in one upping other people?
we have outside cabins, as it is all we need for our cruise
hopefully now even the most inept user of sochal meedya gets my drift

If I'd paid that amount for a suite I'd be shouting it from the rooftops!!!
If you can afford it and that's what you like, go for it. Sadly there are those who feel the need to ram their wealth down your throat at every opportunity but they are a minority and those I know from the forum certainly don't fit that category. In fact you usually have to put your knee on their chests and drag it out of them (along with their wallets!!!).

Re: What constitutes your choice as being the best cabin and why
A further point on the issue of balcony or outside, on our recent Iceland & Fjords cruise we only sat out on the balcony on one day, so an outside would have sufficed, however we would miss the full length patio window.
I don't know of any ocean cruise ship with full length windows in standard rooms, but maybe it would be worth considering, unless of course all new builds follow the Britannia route and only have outside balconies.
We did still use the balcony but only for brief periods, however they are useful to check the outside temps and see if its raining.
In summary, since most everything else on a cruise is classless, its probably those passengers who got a bargain basement deal on an inside cabin who have most to crow about.

Don't worry Shiney if you're ever on the same cruise as us we'll give you a call in your darkened cell to give you a weather update.Silver_Shiney wrote:We use the information/webcam channels on the TV for that!!towny44 wrote:however they are useful to check the outside temps and see if its raining.

I thought that's what the wife is for. 'Run up on deck dear and see what the weather is like'
