Monte Carlo
We will be going to Monte Carlo in September and at present we are meant to be docking. Hubby is in a wheelchair and although I know Monte Carlo is hilly, I was wondering how easy it is to get around with a wheelchair. Any tips would be appreciated

Re: Monte Carlo
There is a Ho Ho bus but unfortunately I don't know if it is wheelchair accessible ( you tend not to notice these things wish I had now ) this would be an ideal way for you to see the majority of the sights failing that someone told us it was no more expensive to go by taxi to visit the palace but it was hearsay so how true it is I don't know.
You would certainly struggle with a wheelchair without transport although at sea level not a problem.

Thanks DQ, hopefully we will get off the ship. Knowing our luck it will be a tender. At the minute is still has only 1 ship in port on that day. I will make do with just staying at sea level or failing that leave hubby in a café whilst I wander a bit further.

Re: Monte Carlo
Hi SM
There are a couple of really helpful elevators in Monte Carlo but they take a bit of finding as they forum part of the car parking complexes. One takes you up to the Monaco-Ville area where the oceanic museum is, and the other is at the bottom of the hill which takes you up to the Casino area. However, as Jo says the HOHo bus is good if wheelchair accessible.
There's a really handy port guide here ;

Re: Monte Carlo
I thought there was an elevator DTM as I seem to remember using it the first time we went to Monaco years ago but I wasn't sure where it was or how you got to it.
We were told the Oceanic museum is superb we didn't have time to do it last year but it is definitely on the agenda if we go again

No, we've not been there either Jo, just walked by the outside - but it's supposed to be amazing. Just seems a shame to go inside when you're in sunny Monte Carlo ! Maybe when it raining
The more central lift was being rebuilt when we were last there - I can't remember seeing any trains, but I think I'm right in saying the lift is part of the railway station complex.

Re: Monte Carlo
We went round on a small road train to see the areas around, but I had to leave my wheelchair behind (well looked after) and was lifted onto the train. It was near the harbour and I suppose we were just lucky as it was just there filling up as we got there. There was a system to listen to details of where we were by using ear phones that gave the details in different languages. You just put it onto the English one.

Ahh that might explain why I've never noticed a lift since, the first time we went to Monaco we went by train from VillefranceDennis The Menace wrote:No, we've not been there either Jo, just walked by the outside - but it's supposed to be amazing. Have a look at Toms Port Guide for Monaco.

It shows suggested walking routes, position of elevators, bus routes and times and more.

Hi Pat, glad you have got a cruise planned for September again. No cruise for us this year (unless you count our week on the Brecon canal!) So shall be looking out for your reviews with interest. Hope you & John are both well. Love Angela.

Re: Monte Carlo
Dear Pat, This year We had 3 separate weeks planned with friends or family, and apart from those we are struggling to find a long enough stretch of time to take off between work and church commitments for both of us. We have got a possible 2 week window in November which runs from Thursday to Thursday ... you might have seen my thread about Iberia in November ... so we might squeeze in a cruise yet, but it's more likely that we'll take Andrew's newly widowed father to a cottage in the Yorkshire Dales

Re: Monte Carlo
Just a little update on our cruise to Monaco. We did in fact dock and thanks to the help of everyone we had a fantastic time in Monaco. We found the lift up to the cathedral and palace area. I would never have found it in a million years if I hadn't been told about it. We then had a walk around the harbour picking out our yacht for when we win the lottery. lol Its my new favourite cruise stop and cant wait until we go again next year, although Hubby will be left behind on the ship because it is definitely a tender port. At least he managed to see it this time.

It was down as a tender port when we went on Azura but to our surprise we managed to dock.

I certainly hope our ship can dock as we join at Monte Carlo. Don't fancy taking all our luggage on the tender.

Re: Monte Carlo
Despite having asked for directions we couldn't find the entrance to the lift as it seems to be tucked away around the corner so we ended up, in a long winded way, walking up the hill to the palace area. Fortunately we are reasonably fit so it wasn't a problem. However we returned to the bottom via the lifts and, as always, it all becomes obvious once you know.
I do love that area around the palace. It has a great atmosphere and is just a very pleasant place to be. We have never been into the Aquarium (a bit of once you have seen one fish you have seen all of them) but have often wondered if we are passing up an experience. It does look very inviting in there, especially with its links to Jacques Cousteau.

We weren't that impressed with the Aquarium itself, although the coral was attractive. We have better in this country.
