freedom dining and singles

#1

Post by cruisingtoski »

Hello everyone,
My first post on the forum but I have been dipping in and out for some time now !
I would like some advice on freedom dining for singles. I have done freedom dining as part of family and it worked well but travelling solo I have only done a late sitting on a table of 8, which again worked well.
Very soon I’ll be joining Arcadia for the Singapore to Dubai leg of her world cruise (getting quite excited now! :D ) and have been allocated freedom dining and waitlisted for late sitting. I will contact the maître’d when I embark but worst case scenario is that I’m stuck with freedom.
So a couple of questions , firstly have other single travellers experienced freedom and how was it? Secondly I usually have a bottle of wine with my dinner and then whatever is left is kept for the following evening , can this still be done with freedom?
Any advice, hints and tips would be much appreciated. Many thanks
D

I can only answer for the wine. Yes, the wine waiter will put a marker on it an keep it for your next visit.

Hello Cruisingtoski and welcome :)

I had Freedom dining on Azura last year and had no problems - I just turned up and was placed on a table for eight or ten. Unlike Club dining you will be dining with different people each night unless you pal up with some of the other passengers and arrange to meet up to dine together - they are very accommodating and will sit you all together.

As QB says your wine will be labelled and you will be given a receipt to give to the wine waiter when you next dine.

Have a wonderful time on Arcadia

Thanks very much Jan (and QB) for the info about the wine and reassuring me about freedom dining. :)
Whilst I’ve been really looking forward to this cruise the freedom dining bit had been ‘niggling away’ at me for a while but now I feel happier about it as it does sound as if freedom may not be that bad after all. I was concerned that I would end up on my own on a table for 2! I am quite gregarious so different people each evening doesn’t faze me but as you say I may well pal up with someone anyway.
This cruise crosses off a few more places on my bucket list and not long now to wait until I join Arcadia on 13th March after spending a night in London and a night in Singapore. The cases are out and my spare room has clothes hanging everywhere waiting to be packed!
I’ve been following Sue Kersh’s excellent blog and it does sound as if she is really having a good time.
When I get back I may try and write a short review of my experiences as a solo traveller on the sector from Singapore to Dubai, although I’m not sure anything I write can live up to Sue’s blog!

Don't worry about table size, just let the head waiter know what you'd prefer and he will meet your every need.

A quick update as now back from my cruise. My fears about my dinner sitting were unfounded as when I arrived in my cabin there was a card advising me I had been allocated second sitting on a table of 8.
A bit now about my cruise on Arcadia from Singapore to Dubai, a part sector of her world cruise. I won't go into too much detail as an excellent review has already been written by Sue Kersh.
Two days before setting off from home the upgrade fairy arrived and I was upgraded from an obscured view outside to a deluxe balcony (all balconies on Arcadia are categorised as deluxe). So I set off on my journey a very happy bunny indeed  . The cabin was excellent but I had I paid for a balcony it would not have been my first choice. It was situated forward on the starboard side and was steel fronted, which was not a problem as the balcony was quite spacious. On the times we were sailing south to north I had the morning sun and it was good to have an early morning cup of tea watching the sun rise especially so when we were arriving in port. Also I had some sun for most of the morning but I was the only one using it, two sun lovers would have been fighting for a space in the sun! When travelling east to west there was not really much sun at all but it was still nice to sit out and read. So in a nutshell as a sun lover I would not have chosen this particular cabin for this voyage although I think for shades seekers it would be ideal however I was very grateful for the upgrade and it has spoilt me somewhat for future cruises.
On this occasion I did the ship tours in all the ports and felt they were excellent and represented good value for money. I don't always choose the ship's tours when on a cruise but it does depend on the country and how comfortable I feel going it alone.
The food in the MDR was excellent but I think maybe not quite as much choice as on previous cruises. There has been a lot of discussion about the demise of silver service but quite honestly it wasn't a problem for me, the meals were well presented and as hot as any restaurant meal is by the time it gets to your table, so no complaints from me.
There were a few good acts on in the palladium but by and large I felt that for the sector I was on the entertainment was mediocre. There were however some excellent daytime talks, notably a series of talks by Dale Templar, the series producer of Human Planet and a talk on piracy by the Royal Navy Liaison Officer.
This was the second cruise I have done solo and the second as a sector of a world cruise. I had cruised previously with my late husband and after he died with other family members. Cruising solo is a very different experience but in my view a good way to see the world safely. You do have to make a real effort to chat to people but as I'm sure other single travellers would agree a smile and a few words can start up great conversations
Anyway in conclusion it was an excellent cruise and even with the hefty single supplement I felt represented good value for money, it covered a number of places on my bucket list. Just trying now to decide on my next cruise, so many places, decisions, decisions!! :?:

So glad to hear your cruise went well - as a fellow solo passenger I understood very well your misgivings. Like you I have travelled with friends and family since my husband passed away but have done a couple of cruises on my own and thoroughly enjoyed them but you do have to make an effort sometimes and people are genuinely very friendly. Well done you

Very encouraging to read these posts! I'm trying to decide whether to take myself on a 7-night cruise to the Med! My husband and I cruised a few times, but he died earlier this year and although I'm an outgoing person, it's pretty daunting to think of going on my own!

Hi Lynn,
I would say go for it. I know it's daunting but I don't think you will regret it. It took me a few years after my husband passed away to book my first solo cruise and then in a moment of madness booked to go on a sector of a world cruise from Sydney to San Francisco, with a week in Sydney precruise!! I had a fantastic time and now wonder why it took me so long to take the plunge!
I have only cruised solo on P and O so can't comment on other cruise lines but on P and O there are coffee mornings and lunches for singles. If you choose club dining they seem to sit the singles together and it's worth asking for a table for 8 as that should ensure if there are any 'no shows' at dinner you won't be eating alone.
I think cruising is a perfect holiday for solo travellers there is so much to do and always others around to chat to. The only drawback is the hefty single supplement!!
Good luck!
D 8-)

Glad that you had a smashing time.

Arcadia is a lovely ship isn't she?

I've been trying to get my Mum back to cruising since my step-dad died but she resists, claiming she doesn't like the huge surcharge for singles.
Now there are some more single cabins coming on the market, I'm hoping she'll change her mind because she used to love it and came alive in the evenings in the casino.
Empty vessels .. and all that
