With that kind of damage on the inside I dread to think what its done to the outside….a real bummer for those booked on her as I can’t imagine this is going to be a quick fix.

Trust Onelife to sensationalise things…

The captain earlier told passengers there was "no structural compromise".

If you look carefully you can see the Captain swinging on a rope inspecting the rivets

Another case of not letting the facts spoil a good story.

The article above quoted
"We were docked overnight in Palma and the wind was so strong our anchors broke and we blew out into another ship.

"We were up browsing on our phones in bed and heard the big horn after the bang.

Firstly when in port anchors are not used and the incident happened later in the day as many passengers were ashore on excursions.

The article also says the ship is 330m high. That's pretty high!

P&O Britannia cruise ship crashes during Mallorca storms https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-h ... e-66633547

Maybe a case of poor ship securing dock side. The ropes used are heavy duty stuff. Either not enough ropes were used or they were left too slack. Just my opinion of course.

Anyway, best get on as I’m going to be busy with compo forms.

Talk about bad reporting. This picture is on the Daily Mirror website with the caption "Passengers on the Britannia cruise ship were in floods of tears after the storm hit".

That is most definitely not anywhere on board Britannia!

Agreed - but it could be the terminal building.

Why does the press relish something going wrong with a cruise ship - it's almost bordering on jealousy that some people go on a cruise and they don't.

A really good example of what the wind can do, these ships have a massive air draft, like a huge sail, so when the Captain says he is unable to enter a port, these things play a big part of that decision. May be next time a port is missed this may have been one of the factors in play.

We have, and she’s big.

The Captain must surely have done his weather checks and known about the storm was approaching and made sure his ship was made extra secure, and more importantly checked that it was. At the end of the day the buck stops with him.

The forecast was for rain and strong winds, but not the severe thunder storm winds that happened.

So your telling me that with all the high tech onboard they couldn’t see the weather deteriorating.

Probably went by the BBC forecast ;)

I'm sure that they could but there will have been other factors to take into consideration. As the ship was overnighting in port then there is the possibility that some passengers and crew could be ashore, then they would have to arrange for a pilot to guide the ship out and also have to deal with shoreside activities.

For all we know the local advice could have been staying put is safer than going out to sea

Might have been able to see it a few minutes before it happened. Probably little they could do about it. We had a sudden squall once on Aurora. They closed the gangway and put the side thrusters on full blast to help pin us to the quay. In our case it passed but it was touch and go for a while.

Pugwash sounds more appropriate :)

P&O must have found a panel beater and a bulk buy supplier of filler as P&O are still advertising the next cruises, one of which sails this coming Friday.

According to a post on a FB Britannia group, the ship can't sail with the full complement of passengers and crew - maritime rules cos some of the life boats were damaged, so some are being flown home from Mallorca immediately. The ship is missing out Gib ( which I assume is its next and final port) so it can race back to Soton to get the lifeboats sorted / replaced in time for next cruise.

A copy of the captain's letter was posted.

The moaners are out in force cos "they only booked for Gib " etc etc

I wonder how they decide on who flies home. At the moment there are problems with flights due to a compter outage with traffic control.

some say - it's those on the deck affected, others that it's those who were allocated to those lifeboats.

I wonder if people can volunteer?

and what about peeps who can't fly for whatever reason - phobias, medical conditions?

The ship is due to sail at 8 pm tonight - so perhaps there'll be hotels for the fliers until Air traffic control is operational again.

I am fairly certain that the sudden tornado like winds that can spring up from thunderstorms are not that easy to predict, and once they do it would have been very difficult if not impossible to successfully cast off and head out to sea, without the help of several tugs to hold Britannia stable while the lines were slipped.

The current info on CC is that passengers in affected cabins on deck 8 are being asked to fly home, but anyone who cannot fly, or would prefer not to will not be forced to fly home. So I guess they will looking for some volunteers.
