Gill D Live from QM2 (Singapore to Southampton)

Afternoon all. Here's the first update from Gill on the QM2 Worldie :

Thursday 10th

Cunard had arranged a bus transfer for the 40 of us at the Fairmont with all luggage travelling by truck, but we took a taxi a few minutes earlier for the 10 minute journey, thinking we might beat the queues! How wrong we were! Voyager of the Seas was in as well and it was packed. Anyway, after a rigorous security screening, and a short wait in the pre-embarkation lounge, we checked in and were onboard.

Our original booking from Dubai was in the QG, but when we added this extra bit, we opted for Britannia Club for this leg, which is a glassed off area in the Britannia Restaurant, but with single seating anytime dining, instead of the two seatings in Britannia, and with your own table for all three meals. We arrived at our cabin and straightaway realised we had made the wrong choice so went down to reception and after some communication between the ship and Southampton, and a payment that will make a hefty CC bill this month, we moved cabins, T ordered the whisky and wine he wanted for the bar set up, and we chose the soft drinks we wanted the 'fridge stocked with. We declined evening canapés! Now all settled, we were ready to enjoy ourselves for the whole of the voyage(s)

Sail away from. Singapore was scheduled for at 8pm, though because as usual there were some later back to the ship, it was nearer 8.30, but what a fabulous sail away it was, no singing and dancing around the pool, just the magnificently lit up sky line slowly receding, before eventually disappearing altogether.

Friday 11th

We were at Port Kelang for Kuala Lumpur. This is NOT a place we wanted to re-visit, so given all the rushing around we had done the past couple of weeks, we skipped it, going ashore only for a brief walk outside the terminal building as there is really nothing around to see. We spent the day reacquainting ourselves with the ship and relaxing. T caught up with some laundry from our travels.

Before dinner we had a rather nice cocktail in the Lounge accompanied by some delicious canapés - just as well we had declined those delivered at 5pm - and then dinner was wonderful. We never eat more than two courses, so given T has a sweet tooth, skipped a starter and he had veal, while I had something I really liked but for the life of me can't quite remember what, although I know it involved mushrooms! Afterwards we spent a while in the Chart. Room listening to a Jazz trio, then ended the evening in the Commodore Club, listening to the pianist.

Saturday 12th

We were at Langkawi. We were along side by 7.30 as advised by Capt Wells and opened our curtains to dozens of islands appearing out the early morning mist, it was really magical and I took many pictures, though I doubt any will really do justice! We were not taking an excursion so decided to take the shuttle bus to the UnderwaterCentre and then visit a beach. We had to be on board by 3.30 so not too long here anyway.

The island, or what we saw of it, was pretty but rather uncared for, with litter strewn everywhere. But the beach was quite picturesque and the sea unbelievably warm and very calm. Unfortunately it wasn't clear so no point in snorkelling. I did see lots of tiny fish swimming around my feet in the shallows though. Two or three hours here was enough and we made our way back to the ship, where we popped into the Concierge Lounge to book trips in Oman and picked up some juice and a couple of sandwiches to make a late lunch on the balcony.

We went for pre dinner drinks to some guys we had met earlier in the day, who were just a few doors away and then went down to dinner, really quite late for us.
T had grouper and I had a blue cheese soufflé, followed by crepes suzettes flambeed at table for both of us - and very nice they were too! Afterwards we went to the theatre to watch the show VivaItalia. Hmmm, I heard many passengers saying how good it was, I am not so sure I would agree. One of the female singers was on QE last year and sad to say has not improved much! Her voice leaves a lot of be desired in my view and her cheesy grin irritates me no end! The costumes were absolutely superb though, quite the best I have ever seen onboard any ship and I would say the production was "interesting" but we are not especially fans of the shows, so it doesn't bother us unduly.

Sunday 13th. Happy Birthday Tony!

Today we are at sea, sailing from the Andaman Sea past the Nicabar Islands and towards to Bay of Bengal. It has been a gloriously hot, sunny day with seas as still and glassy as I have ever seen them. There is no movement to be felt whatsoever which has been great for dolphin spotting, and true to form we have seen a few. We had breakfast in the restaurant - assorted fresh berries and natural yoghurt for me, museli and smoked salmon omelette for T as it's his birthday! We have done one miles around the deck, so far and will do another later this afternoon. It has been so lovely we have spent the day on our balcony and got Robel, to bring some lunch from the restaurant here. A little later this afternoon we are going to a showing in the Planetarium and then this evening there are drinks with the Captain in the Winter Gardens for those embarking at Singapore. It's formal so I look forward to seeing all dressed in their finery - generally, the dress code has been interpreted very differently by different people. A great number of Asian folk embarked at Singapore, mostly until Dubai we have been told, and most of them look fantastic in their own attire at all times. Sadly some people - maybe those that have been on for longer, appear to have a different idea of formal! Last night, one man's idea of a jacket - which is ALWAYS required - was an anorak! By the way, , there are only 90 passengers doing the 120 night Southampton to Southampton voyage! And 1700 of us embarked at Singapore! There are also a good number of our antipodean friends on board at present, though I understand many hundreds left at Singapore.

More later.......

What was the problem with Club balcony cabins Gill, we haven't tried Club so would be interested to know.

Sounds as if you have got off to a good start and got your priorities right with the bar set up

April 13th continued

The day passed much as described earlier, most of it on the balcony. We went to the Planetarium in the afternoon and saw A Search for Life, narrated by Harrison Ford. Then after a quick glass of champagne in the Lounge, we went to the party in the Winter Gardens. Although the invitation said it was for those embarking at SIN, the Captain suggested it was for those in the highest tier of the loyalty club - but we are not in the top tier, so I really am not sure quite who it was for, anyway there were only about 50 there. There were fabulous canapés served and real champagne, not the vile sparking wine they provide in the cabins, so after a couple of glasses and the one I'd had earlier I was really rather merry!

Dinner was wonderful - last night T had requested a Chateaubriand which is normally prepared for two, but I am vegetarian and so he was given the lot himself! I hadn't fancied anything on the menu, so at lunch time had requested a vegetable curry and the meal I was given was fantastic. We then went to the early performance of the Beatles Experience, which was so good we went back for the later performance as well!

April 14th - sea day

Today was always going to be a difficult one for me, my elderly mum, who is very frail, and had developed swallowing difficulties and subsequent massive weight loss, was having an endoscopy and it was suspected had a nasty oesophageal tumour, but fortunately it turned out it wasn't that at all and while her problem can not easily be treated at her age, it was still very good news.

We did our three laps around the deck after breakfast, then had a pirate drill, where we waited in the corridor outside our cabins for half an hour, chatting to our as yet unmet neighbours, while the ship revved up to 29 knots to escape from the potential pirates. It all went smoothly and after Sri Lanka tomorrow, pirate restrictions will apply - lower decks closed from dust to dawn and curtains closed when the lights are on etc - right the way from Sri Lanka to Aqaba, as the pirate infested area has been recently greatly extended. We then went to a most interesting talk about Osama Bin Laden by Jane Corbin from BBC Panorama. The theatre was packed, if rather chilly, and it was very thought provoking. Lunch was a very nice blue cheese and grapefruit salad which seemed restrained but the dessert that followed, ruined our good intentions! Later T went to a wine tasting, accompanied by 5 appropriate tasting plates, and returned more than a little jolly! I had remained on the balcony, in the hot sun, with another flat calm sea, waiting for the news from home. It took another three laps round the deck to get him a bit more sensible!

Afterwards, we had some friends in for pre dinner drinks and then enjoyed another lovely dinner - a trio of melon salad starter and vegetable biryani for each of us and NO dessert, even though the Maitre d' tried his hardest to persuade us to allow him to prepare crepes suzette for us again. We resisted, but did manage to almost demolish the platter of petit fours between us! We have a nice table for two, which allows us to be in and out of the restaurant as fast, or as slowly as we want, while close enough to the tables either side, to chat. Since neither of us can sit for long, we tend to spend less time at meals than many. Having had a late night last night and a stressful day for me, we returned to our cabin after dinner to watch a movie.

Gill - glad to hear the news regarding your Mum wasn't as bad as you expected. I remember my sister being away on a cruise in 2000 when our Mum was taken ill and she spent an absolute fortune on phone calls home most days in order to check on the situation.

Thank you for the excellent reports - I am enjoying them.

We went on a cruise one year and an elderly friend dies unexpectedly. The following year a friend with terminal cancer passed away. We missed both funerals. Our remaining friends now fall out with us just before we go on a cruise

Latest from Gill :

Tuesday April 15th - Colombo, Sri Lanka

Another wonderful day, even hotter than it has been so far. We had planned to take a taxi to the Hotel Lavinia, a lovely colonial hotel, with the two guys we have become friendly with, have a walk on the beach, a little lunch and return to the ship mid afternoon. Unfortunately, while walking around the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, I did something to my left knee, which has been giving me a of of pain and although it has been slowly improving, last night I twisted it badly turning over in bed and this morning could hardly put any weight on it at all. So with profuse apologies to the guys, we cried off our jaunt. There was a small so collection of stalls on the pier at the bottom of the gangway so we went to look at them, though it was a great struggle for me to walk down and back and that was as far as I got. In the afternoon T took the shuttle bus into town and straight back, just to look at the scenery as it happens, because it was a bank holiday and absolutely everywhere was closed!

We had a salad up on deck 12 for lunch, at the Boardwalk cafe and then at about 7.30 yet another lovely dinner - we both had a vegetable biryani followed by yet more crepes suzettes. I really cannot get enough of them! We have requested banana foster for next time. We spoke for a long time to the Maitre d' who was telling us about the extensive alterations planned for all three ships at their respective dry docks, quite some changes afoot it appears. And we put in our request for a particular table when many passengers change at Dubai. I love the way the Maitre d' escorts ladies to their table, offering his arm for the long walk into the restaurant. A very genteel tradition.

After dinner we went to the Royal Court Theatre to watch a show by a Mind Reader. I have forgotten his name for now. Although slow in his delivery, his act was astonishing and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot for the life of me think how he does what he does. We were quite surprised to see so many passengers walkout during the show and felt had they hung in there, they might well have been as impressed as we were. Later, we lost a few dollars in the Casino, then retired around 11pm. The clocks went back half an hour, the third adjustment in a row, which now puts us 4 hrs ahead of BSS.

Wednesday 16th April - sea day.

I can't manage the three laps around deck right now so did1 1/2 laps pre breakfast, followed by the same afterwards. We went for a swim in the pool under the retractable roof on deck 12, which for some reason was closed despite the intense heat, then spent a time on the Grill's deck on deck 11. The fruit skewers and mini rolls they bring around are delicious. Afterwards a talk again by Jane Corbin, this time about the changes being made by the Pope, before a ploughman's in the Golden Lion pub.

T then went to a "nearest the pin" ( whatever that may mean!) at the driving simulator while I went back to relax deck 11. It's generally lovely and quiet there, until the band plays reggae around the pools on decks 7&8! And we like the fact there is always some shade if you want it, which we invariable do.

Our plan was for AfternoonTea today, as we would be late dining, having a party to attend in the Queen's Room first. But the golf tournament thing clashed so we we just got a quick sandwich and scone from the Concierge Lounge which is just along from our cabin on deck 9. We had our usual pre dinner drink and then attended the party - wow it was heaving in there, with over 750 Gold and above World Club Members. The Capt made his speech and the most travelled guests were announced and flowers awarded. Very nice canapés and an acceptable champagne were handed out, with plenty of top ups if required. We chatted to a very nice couple throughout and the hour passed very quickly, meaning we had to rush to get to dinner before "last orders" at 9pm. We made it with a few minutes to spare and had another excellent meal. T had fillet steak, I had a vegetable cake, Provincial style. Just one scoop of coconut ice cream followed, and T had a chocolate Marquise, which he declared outstanding!

After this, there was a performance in the Grill's Lounge by the Russian String Quartet Anima. I had listened to them playing in the Grand Lobby a few days ago and thought they were good, but in a smaller, more intimate setting with an audience of only about 30-40, they were exceptional. And all very young!

Security is very much in evidence around the ship now, with the Security Officers on 24 hr watch on deck 7 alongside their LRADs. Armed guards were taken on board at Sri Lanka and the passenger restrictions are now in place. I got up in the night and drew back the curtains to look out, it was somewhat eerie to see the ship with n deck lights on at all as far as I could see. Looking at the wonderful, calm sea it's hard to imagine anything happening, but earlier, from our balcony, I suddenly noticed one of the Security guards stiffen and radio to someone, then noticed a small boat in the distance, after a moment or two, she relaxed a little when it was obviously a small fishing boat and was not approaching us, so I guess the risk is there - albeit small.

Thursday April 17th - the second of 4 consecutive sea days.

Another hot, sunny, calm day with flat calm seas. Don't you just love it when it's like this?

To be honest really didn't do much at all. Walked a little around the boat deck, had a swim in the deck 12 pool, lay out on the deck 11 terrace a lot of the day, where we got offered fruit skewers and small filled rolls this morning and ice cream this afternoon. Abstained from the rolls, but forced the ice cream down and fruit is healthy - yes?!

Another formal tonight, second in a row, but no special party or ball, at least as far as I am aware. Only going to have a salad tonight, we are eating more than we would normally do and feeling the worse for it. Not helped by big bowls of crisps and peanuts appearing in our cabin this afternoon, I assume because we have chosen not to have canapés!

Might go to watch 12 Years a Slave, in the Planetarium. I watched it on the plane to HCMC, but it was an excellent, if difficult film to watch. Or might watch Appassionata, the production show, in the theatre yet again this voyage!

Friday April 18th the third consecutive sea day en route to Dubai.

More of the same - lovely! Fabulous weather 86F and slight seas. Sent some laundry as there was a good deal of a bag containing up to 30 items for $40. We sent loads of shirts, trousers and summer dresses and saved a packet! Saw a few dolphins and a shark swimming right beside the ship early morning and then a solitary whale later, though that was further away. No lunch as such, just a tiny ciabatta handed out on deck and a couple of small scoops of the lovely ice cream later.

Had a letter about changing cabins at Dubai. All seems pretty simple though contrary to what we have been told previously, we DO need to pack all non hanging clothes and incidentals, AND be out of this cabin by 8.30! But may not be in the new one at that time!!!

There was an amusing Murder Mystery played out in the theatre in the afternoon, where various members of crew ( dancer, singer, Ents team member, musician etc, about 8 in all) played their parts and read their lines standing at a mic as if on radio, and clues were given as to the murderer, by a few bars of a song being played. We got most of the song titles, but it still didn't help us identify the murderer. It was great fun though. And there was a good Q&A session in the morning, with Panorama's Jane Corbin, who sat beside us on deck this afternoon, under a HUGE straw hat........constantly tapping away at her Mac!

Otherwise, an informal night ( jacket required as always) and we intend watching a duet sing show songs after dinner, and then possibly go to watch The Great Gatsby remake, or lose a few dollars in the slots.

Last sea day before Dubai tomorrow.

Saturday April 19th - fourth consecutive sea day en route to Dubai.

Happy Easter!

It looked very disappointing when I got up as usual at 6am, very misty and rather damp looking, but by the time we got up on deck after our swim at about 9am, it was a real scorcher. It was so hot, we couldn't actually stay out on deck, even when in the shade, and retreated to our starboard balcony, which is on the cooler side of the ship. It was still hot there, but I lay the cushions out on the floor and lying down completely flat felt cooler than stretched out on the steamers. Anyway, that is where we spent the morning, had a salad lunch there and remained until about 3pm, when we went back up on deck for an hour. Throughout the day we have seen a couple of pods of dolphins and a mummy turtle with her baby swimming by.

We are now steaming through straits between Oman and Pakistan and will soon be passing relatively close to Iran. We have had a lot of info about the care we must take in Dubai, there is unrest and we need to be vigilant - believe me, any sign of any unrest and I will be back on the ship pronto! We plan to do some shopping during the first day, followed by drinks the Burj Al Arab in the evening as we were unable to book Afternoon Tea with it being Easter Sunday. Next day, after moving cabins, we may choose the beach or perhaps just the Gold Souk. Annoyingly our camera has developed a lens error which seemingly is troublesome, and expensive, to repair, so it looks as though camera shopping will be on the agenda at some point.

I think there are a great number of passengers leaving the ship tomorrow and many others joining. Our new cabin will be right opposite the Concierge Lounge on deck 9 on the port side, so we will have a lot more sun and probably need the use of our parasol. Although I was disappointed at having a starboard cabin for this leg, it has actually been a god send as it has been great to have the shade. But it will be better being on the port side for the Suez Canal. There are some wonderful Easter displays around the ship and I had an excellent toasted Hot Cross Bun for breakfast.

Tonight we are going to the cinema to watch Diana - my choice, not T's - after dinner. Dinner will be lovely I'm sure, but it will be something to get through to then have our Bananas Foster, which we requested last night. Usually I lose weight while on a cruise, But I feel confident that will NOT be the case this time! All my clothes fit nicely still, but we have another 20 nights to go - eeek!

Last night when we got back to our cabin, we found no usual pillow chocolate, but two Lindt chocolate bunnies, about 6-7" tall, sitting on the bed. The clocks went back again, putting us just three hrs behind BST.

We arrived in Dubai! at about 6am. Dawn was breaking and it was very hazy. We could see the Burj Kalifa and the Business district from our balcony.

After breakfast, we took a taxi to the Dubai Mall. Dubai isn't especially one of our favourite places, but this Mall is truly AMAZING! We bought a new pocket camera as ours has developed a lens error, and I bought a top and some undies! I was very taken with a pair of Jimmy Choos but they were ridiculously priced even for Choos! Though they were exquisite! We walked and walked and walked, until I couldn't walk any more, so went back to the ship for a swim and a couple of hours on a lounger, then prepared ourselves for an evening at the Burj Al Arab.

Oh my gosh, what an amazing place this is! Yes it's OTT and maybe even a bit tacky - in the nicest possible way - but it is still amazing. We had drinks, including the most delicious non alcoholic cocktail EVER ( an Eastern Delight) and a hot/cold mezze between us, plus the canapés and nuts etc they brought, all with the most spectacular view over night time Dubai.

When we left they plied us both with small Easter Eggs and then presented me with a large chocolate chicken! Yes the evening was expensive, but what a great experience.

We arrived back at Port Rashid to see loads of crew going ashore for a good night out, including our cabin steward, who thanked us for his tip and kissed me! I hope they all have a great evening.

Latest update from Gill after a few iPad/Internet issues, plus she's admitted to getting a bit lazy (you'd think she was on holiday!) ;

Monday April 21st, Dubai again.

Apologies for the delay. Did I mention we had gone to the Burj Al Arab last night? My notes have disappeared from my iPad so I can't quite remember what I have sent already, nor the exact dYs that various things happened. Anyway, the Burj was a wonderful experience, though was a LOT OTT. None the less, we had a great evening from the SkyBar on the 27th floor, with a window table overlooking the city. We had a couple of drinks each and a hot/ cold mezze between us, plus the included canapés, all for a king's ransom! We won't be doing it too often thankfully. On leaving, they gave me a delightful chocolate Easter chicken!

Next day we were packed and then in our new cabin and unpacked by 9.30. We then took a cab to the Gold Souk and admired( not !) the extravagant displays in the windows, but didn't buy anything. We then walked to the Spice Souk and bought some spices and a few gifts. It was blisteringly hot, so we got a cab back to the ship and spent the afternoon on the balcony. Europa 2 was in port next to us on one of the days and we were desperate to see more of her, but it was not to be.

Queen Mary2 boarded 1900 passengers today, most of them Brits, Mike Doyle and Terry Waite among them.

Tuesday April 22nd - Muscat, Oman.

We woke early and went out on the balcony to see the majestic mountains of Oman appearing out of the early mist. We berthed alongside Europa 2 again, yet again she tempted us, one day maybe.

We took an excursion the Dive Centre. What a strange place! The sea was almost entirely surrounded by rocky mountains, making the sea really like bath water and very shallow. The sea was not at all clear so unsuitable for snorkelling but reasonably clean, the sand was not! The 3 hours here was enough! We had planned to call at the souk at Mutrah on the way back, but were hot and sticky after temps reaching 100 degrees so didn't bother.

That night ( I think) Mike Doyle did his show and for the first time in many, many cruises, we enjoyed his show, in fact he got a standing ovation.

Wednesday to Saturday, 23rd-26th April - sea days en route to Aqaba.

These days followed a similar pattern. We spent most of the days either on deck 11 or our balcony, with regular dips un one of the pools and the occasional lecture. Terry Waite, who dines at a table for 6 very close to us, gave an excellent lecture on Thursday. Unsurprisingly, the theatre was standing room only. He has 3 more lectures scheduled. There is also a Royal Historian on board and an Aviation expert.

Security has been tight and there has been a heavy military presence on our passage. The weather continues to be extremely hot with calm seas. We have seen many dolphins, turtles, a shark and a whale. One afternoon we had Cruise Critic meet( am I allowed to say that?) and met up with about a dozen memers. We have also been to several Cunard parties and a few private " drinks" parties in passenger's suites. Each time we have met some interesting people - some VERY wealthy I think, as one owned over 50 race horses!

Mike Doyle did another excellent performance tonight before leaving at Aqaba tomorrow and joining QE at Haifa the following day. Not sure whois joining us tomorrow, but I must say, the Cunard singers and dancers apart, the entertainment has been good.

Today's update from Gill :

Sunday April 27th - Aqaba

We woke this morning at 6am to a raging wind, it was actually gale force according to Capt Wells and on the balcony it was absolutely freezing. Now we haven't felt cold for weeks, so this came as quite a shock! We arrived at our berth around 7am and had tugs standing by to aid us in because of the wind. Elat was clearly visible across the Gulf.

We spent the day at the Movenpick hotel in Aqaba, a 5 minute drive from the pier. It was very nice there, very clean and well appointed and we enjoyed the day, but the sea and pools were frigid, all the more noticeable because by afternoon the temperature was unbearably hot and we had to resort to sitting inside. We had a very nice lunch - not included - and a couple of those lovely mint and lemon drinks that are everywhere in Arabic countries. The trips to Petra are not due back until late, at least some of them aren't so All Aboard isn't until 21.30. We are planning on dining early tonight as I think there will be a great number arriving in the restaurant later on.

In the meantime, we have stretched out on the bed in the cool, as even at 5pm, as it is now, it is far too hot to sit on the balcony.

Monday April 28th - en route to Suez

A blisteringly hot day today, with very little breeze because we have pretty much gone round and round in circles in the northern Red Sea all day - at an extremely S L O W speed! We need to enter the Suez lake at the right time, so Capt Wells is certainly making sure we do!

Terry Waite gave his second lecture this morning, again to a packed theatre. His timing and his delivery quite amazing. Two more to go. Madeline Bell boarded at Aqaba so she is singing tomorrow. I remember her well from the late 60s, so I think it will be interesting to see how she sounds these days.

We have spent some of the day on deck, today, some on the balcony. It has been quite disturbing having the sun appear and disappear as we change course all the time. We've certainly made use of the parasol we brought. Tied to the steamers it has provided some welcome shade

Tonight there is a magician giving some sort of show, so I guess we'll go along and see what he's like. Or there's always a film in the Planetarium, usually showing 3-4 times a day. There have been some good films both there and the in cabin TV and we have caught up with a few we wanted to see. It's very good having a dedicated venue. There is also a quiz in the Winter Gardens, a very under used room normally, so we might try that later. We normally love quizzes but because most of them are held in the Golden Lion Pub - and neither of us like the on board pubs on any ships - we have yet to join in! Last night the fantastic Russian String Quartet Anima played again in the Grill's Lounge. It's a small room and really makes for an intimate performance - they really are exceptionally good. Tonight there is a harpist in there, but not being huge fans of the harp - good as I am sure the harpist is - we will give that a miss!

I can't believe that by late tomorrow we'll be in the Med and that feels like the end is very much in sight - though in fact we still have 11 days to go. But being back in Europe where everything is so familiar will not feel anywhere as exotic - though the mobile phone calls will be cheaper, so that at least is good!

Time to call at the Future Cruises desk perhaps :-)

Tuesday April 29th - Suez Canal Transit

Here we are, at a little after 5am, in the lake, waiting for our position in the convoy. There are loads of ships surrounding us, all as still and quiet as we are, and it feels very strange not to notice the throb of the engines. It's rare to feel movement of any kind on QM2 so the stillness itself is not unusual. It's very light outside already, although I don't think the sun has quite risen yet and while not cold, it's definitely much cooler this early!

Later.....

What a great transit the Suez Canal is, very different from the Panama Canal but every bit as enjoyable and probably slightly more interesting with all the history. It was very, very, VERY HOT so we spent the morning on deck right at the stern, feet on the rail, then when the sun got just too much for us, decamped to our balcony and sat/laid under the parasol all afternoon while listening to the excellent commentary from the Bridge.

This evening we have 6 friends we have made, coming for pre-dinner drinks, so Noly, our Butler, has been busy ordering and delivering extra glassware, drinks and canapés etc. Somehow, he has "given" us more wine - although we have definitely had our free allocation - and we have ordered some champagne to go with the last bottle we were given, that we have yet to open. I think we are well stocked - unless they are all raging alcoholics!

Afterwards we are going to the Madeline Bell show and then perhaps the Trivia Quiz. We went last night and did appallingly, so we simply have to redeem ourselves!

Later still.....

The "soiree" went very well and everyone seemed to enjoy it. So much so we were all late into dinner so it was much busier than usual and we had to rush to see Madeline Bell. She can still sing, but was a bit odd we thought - not quite on the same wavelength as everyone else(!) and I'm not absolutely sure we'll go to her next show!

Wednesday April 30th- first Mediterranean sea day en route to Civitavecchia

It is noticeably cooler today, in fact it was downright chilly on the balcony this morning and I have worn 3/4 trousers all day and for the first day since we left the UK, no swimsuit!! It has been very sunny but there has been a very nasty wind blowing. We did our daily deck walk before breakfast.

There was the usual Guess bag sale this morning and I picked up one I liked and was very happy with the price. I also bought some of my usual Clarins skin care products at a very reasonable price. The Terry Waite lecture series had got to his days in Beirut in captivity and it was very, very moving. In fact, at one stage I shed a tear or two. His last session is not until May 7th when he will answer questions from the audience. Each of his lectures has been extremely well attended with people sitting on steps and the floor, despite them being televised for watching later.

This afternoon Tony has gone to the Premium French Wine tasting at Todd English, so I expect he will arrive back in good spirits! We missed lunch today, but I did pop downstairs to the buffet for some ice cream mid afternoon. Tonight there is yet another party - this must be about the 7th or 8th so far and is for those boarding at Dubai, so I am not sure why we got an invitation! We seem to have had one to everything. However, I think we will give it a miss, as it means either rushing dinner for the 7.45 start time, being late going into dinner after the party or even worse, going to the party at 5.15! A few glasses of champagne won't be missed, goodness knows we have had enough of them - I will say Cunard are always very generous with their drinks and canapés at these functions, but we are getting a little tired of them now.

The show tonight is Crazy in Love featuring the Cunard Singers and Dancers - hmm, we MAY go, or we may not! Probably not, as we are not overly impressed with them!

Latest update from Gill :-)

April 30th - May 3rd - sea days en route to Civitavecchia

These days were all much the same, a cool if not cold start, up on deck by about 8.30 then gradually as the sun got higher in the sky, it warmed up and by about 10.30 would be very warm indeed, provided we could get a spot out of the wind. Tartan travel rugs appeared on the sun beds on deck 11 and were very welcome until the temperature rose.

We always went back to our balcony for lunch, which was usually a roll from the buffet. Travelling west -ish we had the afternoon sun and it was pleasantly quiet and warm. Evening entertainment ranged from the good - a couple of excellent acrobats of the genre of the Cirque d' Arcadia from a few years ago - all hanging from lengths of fabric and lots of counter balancing with amazing core strength and some excellent magicians and mind readers. To less good singers etc. Watching the ballroom dancing in the Queen's Room is always fun, some of the passengers take it so seriously and are such exhibitionists! One couple in particular, while good dancers, are so "in the zone" we have to smile to ourselves. I do think sometimes, some of the somewhat less able dancers, who would like to have a shuffle around the floor, are intimidated by those that (think they) can dance, which is a shame, as the room is there for all to enjoy. Having 4 left feet between us, we stay sitting on the sidelines!

There was an excellent, if rather unusual duo last night in the Grill's Lounge - a guitarist and a Cor Anglais player. You wouldn't think they would go together, but surprisingly they did - extremely well! Unfortunately a group of about 6 or 8 sitting in the room, weren't able to show any consideration for the other guests, nor the musicians struggling to perform as they continued their conversation at the tops of their voices, making hearing the music very difficult. Eventually Tony and another man suggested they might be a little quieter at which point they all stormed out!

Yesterday afternoon, there was a Country Fair in the Queen's Room, proceeds to Cunard's chosen charities, the names of whichI have forgotten! We bought 20$ worth of entry tokens and won a bottle of the vile Pol Acker, a Cunard bag, a tray cloth - do people actually use them these days? - a pencil with a rubber and a token to exchange for a prize at the end of the voyage. There were about 2 dozen or so stalls and games and it was very well attended, so I am sure they will have made many dollars for the various charities.

Today we are in Civitavecchia and Tony has gone to Rome. I was planning on just taking the shuttle into town for some culinary goodies but we have seen our first rain in weeks, heavy rain too so I will see what the weather does this afternoon before I commit myself. A whole load of people have boarded for a look around, TA's I assume or local Tourist workers, whatever, they are very noisy and have "taken over" the buffet!!!!

The end of the holiday is drawing near now, two sea days, then Lisbon, where all three Queens will be berthed at the new terminal together, then 2 more sea days steaming back to Southampton in convoy, in preparation for the 10 year anniversary of QM2's launch.

Gill's final update :

First of all apologies for the delay in any news - all will be revealed!

April 4th-9th - 2 sea days en route to Lisbon and then 2 sea days to Southampton

After his trip to Rome, which he thoroughly enjoyed, we had dinner and retired, Rome being a long day. I woke at 4am to T being "ill" in the bathroom and shortly afterwards, had to ask if he could come out as I needed the bathroom urgently myself! Thereafter, every few minutes one or other of us would rush in there and it became apparent we had both probably contracted the dreaded Norovirus - or else food poisoning, but we hadn't eaten anything the same other than a chocolate mousse, and nobody else complained of illness after that The sickness - and the other symptoms(!) went on and on and on, the pain I had unbelievable.

The Medical Centre were excellent, sanitisation squads sent out straight away and then three times a day, loads of water and sodas delivered etc and the Light and Healthy Room Service Menu, not that we were able to contemplate eating on Sunday or Monday and even then, as I was still having considerable griping pain, I was kept on a liquid diet for another couple of days, in fact even know I am still restricted to bland things. By Monday evening we were allowed out and about the ship again and the final, extremely thorough sanitisation took place .

Because of being quarantined, we missed a few shows, including the first Tom O'Conner, who had boarded at Civitavecchia. We had some pitching and rolling on Sunday morning for a few hours, while we were hit by the Mistral, but that soon passed.

Lisbon on Tuesday was wonderful. We arrived up the Tagus, in a convoy behind Queen Elizabeth, who was in turn behind Queen Victoria. We all managed to squeeze alongside our berths, one behind the other, all facing down river and with us first in line to leave - it was a sight to see. I was still in a lot of pain and extremely washed out so T simply went for a walk for an hour and we spent the rest of the day in the 24 degree sunshine, it was a glorious day.

The sail away was really, really wonderful. As it was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of QM2, there had been a quayside reception for the Cunard big-wigs and local dignitaries and the whole event was filmed for Cunard, press etc. Unfortunately,, so many people had come to watch our departure, traffic was grid- locked and 4 coaches were delayed getting back, which meant we were over half an hour late leaving. But eventually we slipped our lines and one by one, in convoy, made our way down the river, until we were sailing with one of the smaller sisters each side 200 metres away. All this captured on film and a spectacular sight. Photos on sail - and duly purchased - of course!

That evening there was a very funny comedian appearing, for the life of me I can't remember his name, Kev something or other. He " claims" to be Armenian but is of course from the UK and is actually a most accomplished pianist. We thoroughly enjoyed his show and a good night was had. Yesterday - April 7th passed, as it does. We had to present ourselves and passports to the UK immigration authorities, we bought a few bits and bobs in the shop, withdrew some dollars for tipping the many excellent crew members for their fantastic service and we went to the Q&A session with Terry Waite. I could listen to that man speak for hours - we have actually - and while it would not be right to say we have enjoyed his speaking, given the subject matter, he has enthralled us .

Today as usual on the last day, we shall pack as much as we can after breakfast, stow the luggage in the walk- in wardrobe so we can pretend we aren't going home tomorrow. Then Tom O'Conner is on tonight and we have arranged to go to some friends for drinks before dinner and to dine at the same time as our table neighbours either side. Our departure time is 7.10 am so our last breakfast will be 6.30 prompt and our wonderful holiday will be over. I'll post my final thoughts, when we get home.

In the meantime, many, many thanks to Dennis for posting these for me and thank you to anyone that has read them.

Hi Gill, great reports. I have just caught up with them all. It would have been Kev Orkian the comedian / pianist. We really enjoyed his show as well.

Safe journey home.

I've really enjoyed all your reports Gill. I hope you are now fully recovered and I'm sorry you had such an end to your cruise, although pleased that you were well enough to enjoy the Three Queens together.

Gill's final thoughts :

Despite a few hiccups with my knee and the Norovirus, it was a wonderful trip.

Spending time in Saigon with our son and his partner was wonderful and Singapore was a joy, as always. Qatar Airways were excellent, and their lounge at Heathrow truly wonderful. But the QM2 was, as expected, superb. Nothing was too much trouble, service was excellent at all times, the crew are the friendliest and most cheerful we have encountered for many years. Everybody smiles and speaks without any prompting, they go out of their way to offer help. Friendly without familiarity. The ports were of little importance to us, as we just wanted a relaxing break. The weather and sea state couldn't have been better. We adore crossing the Indian Ocean, despite the supposed pirate risk - which is no risk all really, considering the speed QM2 can reach. The food was absolutely exceptional. There was NOTHING we asked for that they wouldn't/couldn't provide.

QM2 remains my favourite ship and although she has a few oddities - her theatre is poorly designed and it is easy to get lost - she offers SO much more than any other ship we have been fortunate enough to travel on. She has style. There is so much room per passenger, both inside and on deck, it is always easy to find a quiet spot. Could we improve on anything? Yes, the jacuzzi baths are unnecessary - for us, we would prefer a walk-in shower - and the deck 11 sun deck could do with a toilet, but overall, the experience suits us so well I know we will be booking on her again before too long.

In the meantime we have voyages booked on both QE and QV to look forward to, IF we are able to make them, given my mother's rapidly increasing frailty. If not, well, tomorrow is another day.

Thanks again to Dennis and to anyone that has been interested in my ramblings.

Thanks for the comments folks and for reading.

Jo, we brought the Scotch and Bailey's back unopened, though Tony did drink all the wine we were given. When we walked into the balcony cabin, Tony just said it wasn't for him any more. I thought it was just about ok actually, though, having been used to a lot more space for some years, it did feel small - especially the balcony. So when he said he wanted to upgrade - and I knew there was availability - who was I to argue :D
