Thinking of going on a Princess cruise and cannot remember the last time we went if they do shuttle buses at the ports and if so are they free or payable.

Similar to most US cruise lines if the shuttle is provided by the port it may be free, if by Princess you will have to pay. But the cost is hardly likely to be a deal breaker.

Never been with Princess so can't answer from experience other than a couple of years ago we had a Princess ship in port with us in Madeira and their passengers were getting on the P&O shuttles back to the ship because they said they had to pay, cheeky beggars got away with it too :o

Have yet to visit a Port with Princess where we actually needed to use a Shuttle Bus ... apart from Ravenna that is.

Last year the shuttle bus was $8 each way per person (this was in Norway and Spitzbergen - dont know if it is cheaper elsewhere). So it soon adds up.
But you buy your tickets at the tours desk and if you dont use them you just take them back and get refunded.

Shuttle buses at Tromsø were charged by P&O and were several pouns each way. We took the local bus -much cheaper.

No, this was P&O and was May 2010, I think. It was several pounds each way into town and would have been a lot of money for me, my wife, daughter, her husband and their two toddlers. We all started walking but after a mile or so my wife and I gave in and caught the local bus which ran every 20 minutes and was only a couple of pounds for an all-day ticket. The others walked all the way which was nearly three miles.

Thats why then I think P&O brought the no charge for shuttle buses in after that date because you used to pay for Helsinki but we didnt the last time we went.

Over the ten years or so that we have been cruising with P&O this was the first that we came across and a lot of people were surprised. I think it may have been something to do with local pressure.

Interesting, thanks for that info. It doesn't actually say whether or not you have to pay.

P&O's FAQ advise ...

" Depending on where you are travelling to, shuttle buses may be available. Most shuttle services are complimentary and are operated by local tour agents or local port agents."

We did a fourteen night med cruise and paid for two shuttles Barcelona $10 and Livorno $5 as we had saved £1000 on the cost of the cruise compared to P&O those costs and the extra cost of tips didn't matter.

There shouldn't be a charge for Livorno, should there ?

Their Port Authorities do/did not allow independent passage through the Port area therefore shuttles are normally provided for free ... unless they are charging for the short drive from the exit gates to the Town Centre.

Yes the port authorities put up a tent by the gang plank and no ticket no exit to the town !! we sat on our balcony watching folk trying to walk along the dock and escape and find a block there... cheeky buggers ! dock Ma*ia !! my guess is .. BUT P&O will are saying only Getaway folk will pay but really if you get a huge chuck off the price of a cruise its not an issue.
