Visiting the dentist whilst on board ship
Hello everyone
Can I just ask what do we do if one of us needs emergency dental treatment whilst on board a P&O ship? I only ask because we are due to sail on Aurora in two weeks’ time and my lovely husband has just told me that he thinks his tooth may be about to fall out. The problem is that he is terrified of the dentist and will only go in an emergency and is refusing to let me book him an appointment with my dentist, he says he will wait until it actually falls out. If we are on board the ship when this happens can the medical centre carry out emergency dental care?
Many thanks
Lynda x

Re: Visiting the dentist whilst on board ship
They can prescribe antibiotics if necessary and will arrange an emergency appointment with a dentist at the next port - I know because it happened to my husband on Oriana. The “Dentist” on board is for cosmetic work only.
Rather than see a strange dentist in a foreign country, I’d see my own before leaving home.

Best advice is to get it seen to before the cruise then he, and you, can relax rather than worry what may happen.

Hi Lynda,
If your husband feels as if his tooth is about to fall out then that's about as close to an emergency as you can get ?
Whilst I don't dismiss the fears that some people have about visiting their dentist but you might like to remind him that the pain will be far less than having to fork out ££££ if he needs a dentist once afloat.
More pain no gain?
Have a very enjoyable cruise
Regards
Keith

Thank you, I'll tell David what you have all said and hopefully that will persuade him to see my dentist next week.

And bear in mind if it's iffy now insurance won't pay out if it happens away.

Thanks Mervyn, but to be honest I hadn't even thought about claiming on our insurance. I'm going to try and persuade David to see the dentist before we go on our cruise. xMervyn and Trish wrote: ↑22 Feb 2018, 22:30And bear in mind if it's iffy now insurance won't pay out if it happens away.

Re: Visiting the dentist whilst on board ship
Get it sorted before you go Lynda, one thing less to worry about and you can then both relax and enjoy the cruise.
Who knows what dentists are like abroad, I know which I would rather see. I had a tooth out at my dentist a few years back, and once the injection had kicked in I didn't feel a thing. And if your husband feels it is about to fall out anyway it will be all over and done within minutes.
All the best

Plus... teeth falling out in adults may be sign of an underlying problem like gum disease which could lead to loss of the lot. Worth seeing a dentist sooner rather than later to prevent that.

A couple of months ago I had my first extraction in over 50 years so you can imagine I was pretty apprehensive. I can assure you that after the injection which was no great deal anyway there was no pain whatsoever. He'll have to see a dentist sooner or later so best to go now and get it over with.

My father hated the dentist too, and wouldn't open his mouth unless they gave him some Valium first.

I know Mervyn but when someone is terrified of going to see the dentist it makes no difference what you say to them. I tried telling David today that if he has a problem with his tooth on our cruise he would have to see a dentist in Norway but he's not listening to me. Personally I go to see the dentist every year and the hygienist in between my dental appointments, something I've always done since childhood. I've just changed dentists to a really lovely young dentist who specialises in nervous patients and David could go to see him. At the moment he's not in pain, he's just got a wobbly tooth I think if he was in pain that would make him see a dentist.Mervyn and Trish wrote: ↑23 Feb 2018, 08:28Plus... teeth falling out in adults may be sign of an underlying problem like gum disease which could lead to loss of the lot. The other option Lynda is to get him pi**ed and then smack him in the mouth and knock it out. Just make sure you get the correct side

Hi Lynda.....If David isn't in any pain why not pop round to the corner shop a get him a packet of toffees....If that doesn't work you'll have to get Stephen the "slapper" round l'm afraid

I'm laughing now but if he doesn't get his tooth sorted before we go away and then starts complaining its hurting him when we get on board Aurora I will be tempted to knock it out for him x

Take some string with you, swat up on slip knots and then seek out a door handle to slam .... easy peasy
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being
