Southampton - where to eat

#1

Post by allatc »

We usually drive to Southampton on the day of the cruise or occasionally stay in a hotel a few miles out however, some American friends are doing two cruises out of Southampton with 3 days between and we are meeting up with them staying at the Southampton Mercure Dolphin in that period.

So, can anyone advise or recommend good (but not massively overpriced) eating establishments within walking distance of said hotel.

Carluccio's In the shopping centre good, Oxford St eateries also good and there are lots of places to eat around the town centre so I’m sure you will find someone to suit, have a great cruise.

Good luck with that if the one in Lincolnshire was anything to go by.

Ennio's is a good Italian Restaurant by the Walls and easily walked to from The Dolphin.

We always used to go the The Cowherds up on Southampton Common. Nice location. It’s just a nice vintage inn. Normal pub food. It became a pilgrimage for us since one of our children (young at the time) mis-read the name as The Cow Sheds. Since then it has always been The Cow Sheds and even without (now grown up) children we still; ‘Let’s just stroll up to The Cow Sheds’ Its part of the routine.

We actually stayed at the Dolphin before our last cruise and I should let you know that the car park is a bit of a maze to find.
If you go on the hotel website, you can download a map of how to find it.
I printed it off and Mrs B navigated for me and we were fine.

There are literally dozens of eating places within a short walk or you can dine in the hotel.
Empty vessels .. and all that

We've eaten in the MPW restaurant at the Grand Harbour and I have to say it was excellent.

Past it several times on our way down to Southampton. I think we've gone in once for just a drink. A very popular pub.

Good to hear DQ.

Unfortunately I can't say the same for the MPW restaurant we went too. Perhaps we were just unlucky and the ten cold meals that came out was a one off! I will say this for them, they bent over backwards to make things right.

We like the Cowherds too, good food at reasonable prices and always a great atmosphere, 6 of us went last Christmas pre cruise and our 4 friends who hadn't been before were very impressed, the only downside for me on that occasion was our table was just outside of the restaurant area so we had people pushing past us the whole time, I don't really mind where we sit if there are only the two of us but I was disappointed not to be in the actual restaurant area as we were a group and considering I had booked 8 months in advance I did expect to be.

We had a great time though so only a small niggle. :silent:

I never really rated his restaurants on P&O Stephen so maybe it is just down to what your experience is on the night, perhaps we were just lucky the night we ate there, my expectations weren't high they never are in an overnight stay in any hotel restaurant which is why we normally prefer to go out to eat but on that occasion the weather was atrocious and we didn't fancy venturing out anywhere.

My expectations are never high whenever we eat out Jo as the food is often disappointing and over priced in my opinion, which is why we don't eat out that often. Mind you, saying that, we do have a very nice Chinese resturaunt in the town near us

Fond, although vague, memories of a place named The Boozy Rouge. This was thirty+ years ago when living on Hayling Island, doubt it's still operating under that name.

How about a Spanish Restaurant. We like La Regata, 10 minutes from West Quay opposite the Isle of wight ferry terminal. Would recommend this Restaurant, had some very good meals here.
Plus another, The Oxford on Oxford Street, not cheap but you get what you pay for, had very good service when we have dined there.
Don't worry, be happy
