Would love to cruise from America to Hawaii, but have received varying reports, like 6 days at sea when you couldnt go onto the open decks because of the weather being so bad. Has anyone done this trip and what was it like and who did you sail with please?

I have just checked my cruise log for you, yes I do old fashioned paper and pen! Can't beat it!!!

We left San Francisco on January 26th and arrived in Hawaii on January 31st. so 5 days at sea.

It was a choppy force 9 the day before San Fancisco but worsened during the night and reached force 12.The spray was hitting our balcony on deck 10 of Aurora.

We left SF in a force 8 which unfortunately once again gradually increased to a force 12 with waves of 6 metres.

By January 29th I noted that is was much warmer and of course when we reach Hawaii it was brillliant weather.

Would we do it again..............yes, even though we had previously enjoyed a land based holiday in SF.

Anyway, that was our weather when we did it, may not be the same for you, can't be any worse than that though!

We don't mind rough weather, even force 12's and we have only experineced mal de mer once and that was in in a force 7 and was due to the movement/swell of the ship rather than the force.

My brother and his family did the Hawaii cruise from America a couple of years back at about Easter time. They sailed on Princess from San Pedro (O think). He said the first day leaving port it was quite overcast (the good old LA marine layer) but they woke up the next morning to lovely weather and it remained so for the 5 days to reach Hawaii. They said the cruise back was just as nice until the last morning when they arrived back in San Pedro

Princess are one option for you to consider, NCL is another.

5 sea days in both directions would be a complete No-No as far as I'm concerned so we would fly with extra days spent in San Francisco one way and San Diego the other.

We have not done the US to Hawaii cruise, however we did a Hawaii to Tahiti cruise on Tahitian Princess, now Ocean Princess and sister to Adonia.
This did about 4 Hawaiian Islands and 4 Polynesian islands including Bora Bora and with all the overnight flights was about 16/7 nights, and I think Princess still do a couple of these each year, check out their exotic cruises.
There are 5 sea days between Hawaii and the first Polynesian island, our cruise had a half day stop at Christmas Island on the middle day, and the beauty of this is that all the sea days are in the tropics so its warm even if sometimes a bit wet and windy.

Hi,

We did the LA to Hawaii outing almost exactly a year ago - leaving LA on Valentine's day. The ship was Cunard QV, accommodation was a Q1 - (7159) so we were well and truly aft. It took 4 days at sea to reach the first port of call, and the sea state was minutely marginally lumpy at times. Some days it was warm enough to go out on deck - other days a little bit blustery.

Wouldn't have missed it for the world. When you are in the islands, the weather at any one destination can include everything and anything all in one day - from tropical rain-forest to cold at the top of the volcano, and then just downright scorchio. Remember that each island has a leeward side and a windward side and if you are going ashore on a diy basis you will need to ascertain which side you are going to and dress accordingly.

The sea state on the return was about the same, but with the obligatory visit to Ensenada due to the Jones Act.

Have sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii on Aurora during its world cruises a few times now and apart from last year when weather all over the Pacific rim was not good we have had terrific weather. I am of the opinion that that anywhere in the world will been either good or bad at any time of year and yes there are a few exceptions where the odds would be against you so really its always a risk whenever you travel. Just go and enjoy.

Oh and hello to everyone who knows me from the other forum.
