TV/internet connection

#1

Post by Meg 50 »

we have just bought a panasonic all singing all dancing TV...

the tv works ok, but I cannot get it to connect to our wireless network connection.

Before I spend a fortune on phone calls, does anyone here have any idea?

It finds our network name and asks for an encryption key/ID.

I have typed in every number I know - the numbers on the router, the default passwords to the router, the passwords sent when we first installed, the network passwords ( which lets the laptops connect ok), but every time we get 'authentication error'

Please, can anyone help?

Regardless of device, a TV in your case, I thought that in order to preserve the security of your network you would need to specify the WiFi Network name ( SSID ) and the Network Key ( Password ) ... both of which are located on the base of the router ?

We have a Smart TV and the same password used for our laptop, tablets etc. was the one it wanted. Are you sure, first of all, that it is your network it has picked up and not next doors? If so just double check you have got the password absolutely right - correct case etc. In which case it should work. The message you're getting is the one we get if we give it the wrong password.

the SSID no prob - cos the device finds that (and shows it as locked which is good security-wise) it's the network key password that is the problem

on the base of the router we have:
P/N, S/N, Mac ID, default passwords (tried all of those and none gets me in)

and the IP no. (doesn't seem to be a place to add that)

We have the list on our comp network and we're the only one of our type on the list. Our password is all numbers

Plan B ...

An authentication error would perhaps relate to the way your encryption is presently set up on the TV ...

Depending on the gear the ' Encryption Key ' settings could logically be ...

SSID - Access Point A ( where A is 2.4GHz etc )
Authentication Type - WPA-PSK
Encryption Type - TKIP

You need to ensure that these are all correctly set up.

ps ... do you need a Panasonic adaptor to achieve wireless LAN ?

If you do and you aint got one then you could perhaps try linking the TV / Router with an Ethernet cable ?

got all the early stuff - AES - though that's a detail I assume

it SAYS it's ready for wireless......

I did consider trying the ethernet cable.

but
1) would that have to stay in all the time?
2) surely I'd still need a password?

I also wondered whether it might be something to do with the direction/distance from the router.

but presumably I wouldn't get the signal showing the SSID in that case

I have assumed than a Panasonic adapter is NOT required, it would be listed at the start of the opins under ' optional ' accessories.

Using an Ethernet cable would show, if it worked, that the wireless connectivity is at fault ... and if it doesn't work that it is ( probably ) the encryption aspect that is incorrectly set up.

The Ethernet cable can be removed to allow the router to be moved but you won't have a network signal on the TV. Best done with the power off I believe.

I'll ponder on the ethernet option - the TV is upstairs and the router in the kitchen so it'd mean taking the router upstairs and plugging it into the phone point in our bedroom - a performance I need to awake for (off out to dinner in a little while) !

thank you for your ongoing help
