Adonia D509 - cheapo deal Cruise Report

#1

Post by Manoverboard »

We had experienced a few problems at home during recent months so collectively said “ Sod it, let’s book a cruise “, we opted for D509 on Adonia.

There are obviously differing views about Select vs Getaway type deals and it is certainly not my intention to start another war about the benefits of either system but I do actually believe that there may be some of our Members out there who are concerned about booking cheapo deals ... this report is not intended to be the panacea of cruise booking.

So ....

We always start our holidays the minute we shut the front door, we generally set off with one’s Chauffeur / Airport & Cruise Terminal Transfer Service Provider / Chum called Neil. He suggested an earlier than usual departure time because of the likely congestion travelling through Southampton on Saturday the 25th April following a truly agro experience on the preceding Thursday but as it happens we whistled through the Dockyards and arrived at the QE2 Terminal at about 11:30. By 12:15 we were on-board tucking into a half way decent curry with another hitherto unknown couple, after the main course I zoomed off to book Sorrento plus Ocean Grill for the three Jacket Required evenings as is our want.

Our cruise price was listed ( I recall ) at approx £2,350 after OBC discounts in the earliest brochures for a mid ships balcony cabin, a good choice by the way. The cheapest balcony cabin range, that of partly obstructed, were priced from release date to departure date at various figures between £1,349 and £1,899. I believe that we finished up paying virtually the same amount by booking 7 weeks-ish prior to departure as that which was available with discounts at the launch date but we each had in effect six free excursions, three free evening meals with occasional supplements and wine plus included gratuities and 12 bottles of in cabin water as a consequence of the savings we made buying the cheapo deal.

+++++

However, there were a few differences.

* We paid in full at the time of booking

No problem, one has to pay sooner or later and it is of course a tad foolhardy to book a cruise without the funds already being in place.

* We had no choice of cabin location but knew it would be a balcony variant.

It was a partly obstructed one on ‘ A ‘ Deck. These cabins are virtually identical to all the other balcony cabins, including the mid-ship ones, but there was certainly more roll being on the higher deck during the BOB transits ... this however I blame on Foxy as he had deliberately hexed us. We needed wibbly wobbly pills on several of the sea days but hardly an issue we concluded.

* No choice of dining sitting.

We were allocated to second sitting, not a problem as this is our usual choice.

* No choice of table size.

We were allocated to a table of four but there were only the two of us, brilliant as tables for two are generally as rare as hen’s teeth. Because of this we had incredible attentive service from our waiting staff ( duly rewarded ) and better still one of them was in charge of table allocation during the breakfast and lunch time periods so if we went to the MDR for these meals we invariably finished up with a table for two next to the window. ( also duly rewarded )

* No shuttle buses

Not a problem because we booked an excursion ( free ) from every Port.

+++++

Itinerary ....

Lisbon .... we went to Obidos, again, but enjoyed it, again, and especially so the cherry brandy chocs that they are deservedly famous for.

In Portimao we opted for a trip to Lagos, a first time visit for us. Sadly we were to discover later in the day that one of the crew had had a heart attack whilst returning from Portimao, we had been chatting to his wife only the day before. P&O were great and sent somebody out to escort her back home to take care of the arrangements etc.

Seville .... brilliant sail up the river to the City, it was a bit like arriving in Southampton but sailing on to Salisbury. Not our first visit so we did a guided tour of the Bull Ring, visited the ceramic factories and then the rest of Terana which was the old gypsy area and home of Flamenco dance. We also did the Cathedral, Citadel, Jewish Quarter plus the Parks of Marie Louis with the Plaza Espania and Place Des Americas-ish. Two days and an overnight stay in Seville, well done P&O.

Tangier .... was a trip to Tetouan, a great choice with superb scenery en-route but there were security concerns regarding this destination.

Villagarcia de Arusa .... signalled our second visit to Santiago de Compostela, the first time having been spent in the rain. It bloody well rained again !!!!

Bordeaux ... a City trip via another river but this is certainly a City that is easy to do DIY, we were very happy with our choice however. It was an ok destination but not as awesome as we had hoped for and indeed anticipated, the wine villages are a good alternative to the City Tour.

+++++

New experiences and changes ...

We sailed shore side past the Isle of Wight and had a stunning view of the Needles.

The wine waiter must have been of Japanese ancestry as when I gifted him an envelope at the end of the cruise he bowed low and shook my hand, ditto Mobietta but instead of a hand shake he kissed her gently on the cheek ... a lovely gesture we thought at the time.

The wine list had changed since our last P&O cruise in 2013, many of the finer wines had been replaced by cheaper, albeit entirely acceptable, choices.

The Menu on the two Captain’s Nights were split into two. The right hand side page displayed a decent selection of meals but the left hand page displayed all those special choices like Lobster Thermador, Beef Wellington and Baked Alaska etc as being new and exciting as suggested by Marco Pierre White ... wot a load of old tosh. My concern was that these choices may become chargeable at a later date.

The first sitting kicked off at 18:15 and the second at 20:15, a small change and a first for us that was very well received.

On this Adonia cruise there were six, possibly more, themed buffet nights. We attended those relating to Tandoori, Asian and Indian Curry .... shlurpppp.

+++++

It was a great cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed everything, even DTM’s book, up until the time it came to disembark.

It seems like some of the wheels must have come off the escalator type gismo that carries the cases on ‘n’ off the ship to the terminal building which resulted in a short delay of about 15 minutes but we also had to park a goodly distance from the terminal building entrance because Azura was in our intended spot which meant walking in the rain for a couple of hundred yards, or so it seemed, with crew and entertainers coming in the opposite direction on a pathway that was obviously designated for one set of passengers who were all going in the same direction. No big deal I guess until we got inside, it was chaotic to say the least. Passengers from both ships were like headless chickens not knowing if the cases they were seeing in the umpteen piles related to Azura or Adonia. The signage was completely useless and there was a total lack of co-ordination by the staff on duty, they couldn’t even identify if there were any trolleys to be found nor indeed from which direction they may arrive if they did eventually conjure some up.

Well ok, we all got out eventually and courtesy of the country roads in these ere parts we got home in one piece ready to search out another cheapo deal for later in the year.

Late deals aside I genuinely believe that you would enjoy the Country House experience that is Adonia.

Adonia is a lovely ship with a good atmosphere and you can always find somewhere to sit. There are a couple of differences from the others that you might not know about until you have been on board.

With fewer passengers (750 ?) there are fewer options for P&O tours so don't believe what you read on the website as 'typical excursions for this port'.
Dining is at 18:15 or 20:15. There is no freedom dining.
The evening buffet is only open on a few nights, maybe twice a week, for tandoori, curry and other specialities.

....................... and no wrap around prom deck, just a couple of planks on either side. There is a circuit up top but it's not very big.The theatre is a show lounge so unless you get there early all you see are heads and shoulders and the feet could be doing anything. There were just 5 entertainers when we were on board although I must say they were very talented.
If none of this matters to you then Adonia is indeed a lovely, friendly ship.

Profuse apologies for my oversight ...

A very very very nice person named ' FoxyModPlod ' texted me with the Watford results during the first afternoon of our cruise to say that the Hornets has beaten Brighton 2:1 and that, as a consequence of this plus other results, they would be promoted to the Prem.

Doesn't get much better than that now does it :thumbup:

Tis true that there is not a wrap around Prom deck but the Deck itself is plenty wide enough for old folks from Cumbria and beyond to stretch out and snooze in the sun or indeed in the shade as the mood dictates, plenty of room and NO reserving of the reclining wooden chairs.

We actually prefer the intimacy of the show lounge environment as it gives a night club feel and the audience are closer to the performers. The troupe of 5 remain and were excellent throughout but there were also a number of other acts present ranging from classical singers to Roger Wright of Lion King fame. It was all very tasteful but for those who cannot see over the low balcony may I suggest that they request a cushion from Reception ....

Ever since I had a bit of an epiphany a couple of weeks ago and realised that I prefer medium sized ships, I have been more keen to try even smaller ships like Adonia.

I hope to get the chance at some point

Absolutely, Ray, but for us a plusher experience than was the case with Artemis.

Hi QB, a few responses ...

The official figure, according to the Adonia post card, is 710 passengers.

P&O do advise that all the excursions listed on their website are ' representational '. One's Cruise Personaliser, as you know, will reveal the exact situation for all ship's cruises. However, having booked excursions on four Adonia cruises thus far I have not personally noticed any glaring omissions.

On our cruise there were 5 buffet evenings, possibly 6, all on casual nights and spread over 14 nights. The themes being GB favourites, Tandoori, Asian, Indian and Spanish.

There is only one restaurant on Adonia of course so FD is presumably not possible ( or indeed desirable ) but there are the buffet evenings plus 4 menus in the select dining venues to take into account if a change from the MDR is required, we opted out six times in total which for us was ideal.

Hi MOB,

We were on a 17 night trip to Western Mediterranean last November and at Civitavecchia and Livorno. The choice of excursions was very limited. Florence or Pisa or nothing, for example. I would have particularly liked the trip to Lucca. I'm just pointing out that there is a smaller choice on Adonia than there would be on the larger ships. We enjoyed the cruise apart from being stuck in Livorno overnight and spending a dreary rainy day there instead of in the Monte Carlo sunshine.

You don't need to sell Adonia to me Moby. Having done a day visit we had planned to do Adonia in 2016 but then P&O started mucking about with mystery cruises somewhere in the US so we've postponed that. I won't get into the fare debate again as I can see the last minute deals work well for you. However Trish is a very poor sailor and would be sick as a dog in a wibbly wobbly cabin. So even if the fare was 75% off that wouldn't be 75% saved for us, it would be 25% wasted if the cruise was ruined by seasickness.

Yes of course you are allowed to ask. While you were away I posted a topic you probably missed. It asked if anyone else had felt all cruised out, because that's how I feel now. Maybe it will wear off I'm not sure, but at the moment I really don't want to get on another cruise ship. I did cough my way around South America and Australasia which didn't help. :(

Ah, didn't spot it or if I did it didn't register with me.

A common problem and one that is easy to resolve, simply book a riverboat cruise or two and then return to cruising with a different Line.

Lo and behold you will then be cured ... how do I know this, don't ask :lol:

I respect your choice of course although I would wish to point out that the wibbly wobbly cabins were not exclusive to passengers on cheapo deals, the mid ship cabins that you favour were similarly affected.

As and when you do book a cruise on Adonia may I respectfully suggest that you opt for a cabin on either 'B' or 'C' Deck else a single £40-ish jab from the Doc may be the order of the day.

Deck B would be our natural choice to avoid both wibble wobble and any possibility of noise from public areas above or below. But are you suggesting your beloved Adonia is an excessively wibbly wobbly ship because we've rarely had any cause for concern midships on any of the big sisters?

she isn't excessively wibbly wobbly, but does have a very strange movement which (an officer told me) even affects seasoned sailors (but not all).

However after a while one gets used to it

Not as far as we are concerned, I was simply trying to show consideration regarding Mrs Merv's ( aka Trish's ) obvious susceptibility to wibbly wobbles.

However ... this was the first time we have traversed and indeed sailed upon the BOB with strong wind driven tidal currents flowing into the side of the ship. There was virtually no movement on the lower decks. Just avoid 'A' Deck would be my advice.

Prior to being Adonia she was Royal Princess and that did indeed have a casino on board ... it was a total waste of space. Too small and not enough punters basically, it was generally like a Nevada Ghost Town.

Casinos, I guess, probably work out ok with 2,000> passengers but not so well with only 700.

So ... thanks but no thanks :thumbdown:

Great report MOB we were on D510 and I was just about to write a report when I saw yours and got side -tracked....Popeye the Sailorman thinks the same as you, as regard the Marco menus on the left of the menu, the lobster, wellington and alaska are all old P&O classics, not Mr W's idea at all.
Anyway enjoyed your report, thankfully when we had to embark the sun had come out and so the walk down the quayside was okay, but would not be good in the rain !!
