Good bye Adonia

#1

Post by Manoverboard »

Seems that Adonia is / seems to be leaving the fleet ...

No description of her nor any of her itineraries for the 2016 / 17 season are specified within P&O's " This is the life ' latest edition.

This is also a nail in the coffin for the three dress code formality of course.

Boooool !!! :(

Adonia is not leaving. I have had a letter from P&O saying that Adonia will be based in the Caribbean during summer 2016 but these cruises have not yet been finalised. Rather than hold up the issue of the brochure for the other cruises they have decided to issue it without Adonia. The Adonia cruises will be issued later.

You are quite right ... having read the publication properly I have now noted the 3 x 2 inch item stating just that, with new and exciting itineraries being developed.

Sorry

If he comes up with any more red herrings like this one, then we certainly ought to chip in for a pair of incontinence pants !!

No, you got that all wrong Onelife.... Britty is being sold to Easy-cruises, to ply the Dover/Calais mini-cruise route in 2017

While we're starting rumours, on board Britannia I've heard that P&O have commissioned a new ship. 300,000 tons with a Wembley sized stadium on deck 25 and already people are saying it won't be like Britannia.

Does that mean they will be serving pies and Bovril in the MDR Mervyn ? crowd control to the toilets at half time could be a problem.

P&O just posted this on their Facebook page -

You may have noticed Adonia's cruises after April 2016 are absent in our latest brochure, we're pleased to be able to provide information on her future plans here: http://bit.ly/1GmNtPd

I really don't know what to make of it :o - doesn't appeal to me at all

So you sail to the Dominican Republic, and for the next few days do some possibly quite strenuous work ashore in a tropical climate, but each evening come back to your suite with it's butler service! Hmmm. I suspect that if the passengers on these trips are similar to Adonia's current aficionados, P&O might be wise to increase the complement of the medical department

Carnival have three little ships, Adonia plus two look-a-likes, that they cannot fill and which are getting too expensive to run. Along comes a US Tax break ( pure speculation ) and a chance for at least one US Corporation to look really eco-friendly and yet at the same time to be able to charge umpteen ' Swampy ' type folks ( £££ ) for providing them with an opportunity to feel that they are at last about to save the World .... albeit in the comfort of a cruise ship.

Thanks but no thanks :sarcasm: .

Like I said in my OP - " Goodbye Adonia ".

That's a bit cynical Moby but possibly true. I have been trying to understand the logic behind Fathom, especially when being offered by a money hungry corporation like Carnival, but I just could not see a financial benefit from such a niche type of cruising, however if it came with sufficient tax breaks then maybe it would be viable.
Losing Adonia will not impact us since it is not very wheelchair friendly, but for those that like her she will be missed.

I think they were a bit disingenuous in their reply to Brian.

They've been implying that Adonia was staying in the P&O fleet, when of course, we now know this was never the intention at all!

I'm also of the opinion that there must be money in it for Carnival.

I can't see how much good it'll be to people of the Dominican Republic, being swamped with 700 'aid workers' for couple of days a week, doing a few hours 'work' a day, before sailing off into the sunset on their luxury cruise ship. I can't help thinking that the locals would rather have a load of mega ships docking, and have the passengers use the local tourist businesses.

Also, I wonder who will actually be supervising these 700 passengers, and telling them exactly what to do when they are ashore.

Until I stopped work at Christmas, I worked in the charity sector for the last few years, so I am a supporter of charitable giving, if it's done right.

If someone has got the money for this sort of cruise and a desire to help the people of the Dominican Republic, I'd suggest it'd be better to use the money to donate to a charity that is active in the area. Or if you wish to donate your time, get involved with something locally in your own area.

I'm sorry, I think Carnival have lost the plot on this one.

Their ' plot ' is surely a tad obvious ... ;), to make as much money as is possible, albeit whilst purporting to be assisting the Islanders. In March 2017 they can show us their good works and then we can eat humble pie, providing of course that they haven't made more profit than they would have made sailing with her P&O colours.

There could also be a considerable number of loyal staff without a contract in this new set up  .

Cynical Moi, normally not especially but in this instance ' absolutely '.

I bet the locals will just be delighted to have a load of over privileged cruise types descending on them to plant a tree or two and then telling them if they work hard and do well at school, that in a few years they could be on a cruise and be as middle class as us
and all the yanks will just moan because there isn't a Starbucks/Costa/MacDonalds/Wendy's ..... again delete as appropriate ,on every street corners and that they have to get their hands dirty

Cynical?..Damn right

From what I can gather, 'Fathom' has been 'officially founded' (posh word for cobbled together?) today!

I reckon that this ceo Dingle bloke is not out to do much for the fleet or the passengers - and that he's busy wrecking poor old Cunard too. Best thing Dingle could do is push orf to Emerdale!

Just what are these 'volunteer' projects? Doesn't sound very appealing to me!

Tourist 'Charity' must surely be the worst kind of all. Who is ensuring that the work being done is what's needed as opposed to what looks good? I fear that it will encourage a dependency which might not be there at the moment.

Text from cruise.co.uk

Carnival Corporation PLC last night announced that they’ve created a brand new cruise line called “fathom” but it’s not like anything you will have seen before!

“fathom” (yes – without a capital f!) is a new line that will be dedicated to something called volunteer tourism.

Carnival will take the P&O Adonia and relocate her to Miami where she’ll sail to Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.

Guests will then spend two days in intensive training to get ready for volunteer activities.

For example, passengers will learn to build water filtration devices or how to teach English and then do these activities for real once they reach land.

The aim is to give guests an authentic and meaningful experience as they help the countries they visit. Carnival are calling the concept “social impact travel” and have said these cruises will be more low key than others lines.

There won’t be a casino on-board, nor theatre productions and food options will include local specialities.

The concept of volunteering whilst on holiday is not a new one – but it is the first time that an entire cruise line has been based around the concept!

It wasn’t long ago that we announced Crystal Cruises were introducing voluntourism excursions and giving passengers the chance to help local communities.

As Carnival Corporation spokesman Roger Frizzell explains: “no one else is doing it on a scale this big!”

Would you want to spend your week’s holiday working? Would you like the chance to spend your holiday giving something back?

Will you be sad to see the Adonia go to this new line? -
