Holland America Dress Code - Susan Calman goes Cruising
We watched Susan Calman goes cruising last night.
She was on a Holland America Caribbean cruise sailing from Port Everglades.
Part of our interest was to see what the ship - Eurodam - was like.
Anyway, we were informed that one night was going to be a Gala Night so she was going to dress up for the occasion.
The HA website regarding dress code reads as follows :
Formal: Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for women; tuxedos, dinner jackets or dark suits with a tie for men.
Well, either the programme was lying and it wasn't a formal night or no-one takes any notice of the dress code :-
Observed :
For the men :
Dinner jackets - 0
Suit and Tie - 2
Open neck shirts - lots
casual trousers - lots
For the ladies :
Posh frocks - 1 or 2
Smartish tops - quite a few
Does anyone on here have experience of HA cruises and formal nights ?

We have been on a number of American Cruise Liners ... the deal is that you dress up if you want to otherwise don't bother, regardless of the evening code.
ps ... didn't watch the prog, sorry, but simply can not abide that soppy woman

That's why we didn't watch it. She's irritating. We much prefer Jane McDonald.

When we did a HA cruise quite a few years ago the standard of dress was high, and this was a cruise out of and into USA.

But why is the shows format exactly like Macdonalds.? Even the singing at the end.?

Because it's a p*ss take!
But we like Susan. Think she's very funny, though I often get her mixed up with Lady Sturgeon.
Our experience of American, as in Princess sailing in Alaska, was that a reasonable proportion of the Yanks dressed for dinner but changed back into their casuals before going to the theatre. Apart from the one bloke who wore denim dungarees all day every day.

Us plus one's Canadian chums say the opposite ... perhaps your cruise was full of conforming Brits

We like Susan Calman and her programme.
It’s just a bit different.
As for the Gala Night.
I did point out to Mrs B that not many seemed to make an effort.
I’d guess that the entire thing is very heavily edited.
It always makes us laugh with the full drink/ half drink edits.
You’d think someone from production would notice

Empty vessels .. and all that

I started to watch it just to see what a Holland America ship was like, especially now Fred Olsen has two of her older ships. I gave up after a while as there didn't seem to be much focus on the ship itself. I thought her cabin looked much like any other balcony cabin. I know many people like Susan Calman but her style doesn't appeal to me. I may be pedantic but I got irritated when she kept calling the ship a boat!

The boat thing is typical Channel 5. Low budgets equals low production values. A good producer would pick that up. I've watched other C5 travelogue type programmes on topics I know and they're riddled with mistakes. Take them as entertainment rather than education.

I am agreement with you Carole. I too get irritated when the ship is referred to as a boat. Worst example was very recently when I read a review on Bolsover's website by a Bolsover staff member who persistently referred to "the boat"CaroleF wrote: ↑30 Apr 2022, 16:50I started to watch it just to see what a Holland America ship was like, especially now Fred Olsen has two of her older ships.
