The purists call them 'steel pans' but whichever...

I love their sound, one of the most evocative in the world.

And a Stradivarius is only a bit of tree and catgut. Where's the romance? The Caribbean without steel bands would be like Brighton without the rock.

Well not quite.

One of the most wonderful evenings that we ever spent was when we stayed on St Lucia for a week and listened to a recital by a local steel pan orchestra(note: not a band) which was called, I think, the Diamond Steel Orchestra. There were only 5 or 6 of us sitting in the hotel lounge at the time but the range and quality of the musicianship was breathtaking. Unforgettable. But if you're ever on Antigua and get the chance to go to a presentation by an iron band then don't miss it.

Only 8 days to our short 3 night cruise on Aurora - can't wait! However, but 196 days to our Caribbean - a back to back - wow! I hope you appreciate I just had to work out the number of days from now until 8th March and had to resort to pen and paper - I know I could probably get the computer to do it but don't know how - and I was never good at mental arithmetic!
