Christmas Markets R322 Copengagen
Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen says the song and it really was. We were due to dock at 1pm but we were two hours late due to foggy conditions on the way.
The Captain apologised in the morning especially that we heard the foghorn at regular intervals during the night. He said if it was any consolation his officers were kept awake too.
As it was now 3pm we didn't have much light left. HoHo buses were at the quayside as were a few tour buses and a shuttle. No 26 bus also comes alongside to take passengers to the city and to Tivoli Gardens. The shuttle bus went to the centre of town and we were told it would take 20 minutes. We took the bus on the second day as we were staying overnight but it took just 10 minutes.
For today we decided to walk to Nyhavn via the sea route and passed the Little Mermaid. Blink and you would miss it. Also on the way we saw the Palace. The guards marched up and down and woe betide if you were on the way. One group of people got shouted at. MOVE yelled the officer in charge. Quite why people act stupidly I don't know but they sure moved!
It was now dark and what had been surprising was the use of lighting. All the restaurants are candle lit and at the entrances of shops and restaurants are candle lit lanterns or candles in jars. Very pretty as none of the buildings have bright lights. The Christmas lights are discreet and subtle which all adds to the wintery Christmas atmosphere.
Nyhavn is situated by a canal leading up from the harbour. Lots of restaurants and Christmas market stalls backing on to the canal. A great buzzing busy busy area and so we stayed for a meal. We sampled the local Glogg - wine and spices plus raw herring which was delish.
We walked back to the ship and it was very dark as not many street lights around. The dockside is separated from the road by a single wire fence so no terminal area to go into. Also outside the dockside is a selection of single story shops which is a factory outlet. At the end is a cafe where free wifi is available for the crew and anyone else for the price of a cup of coffee. Apparently if your cabin is situated port side you can still get a signal.
Part two next.

Yes the guard in charge did shout in English. I am not sure if he tried other languages first. A crowd of people were standing around to watch the guards. I would have thought the sensible thing would be to keep a distance but there is no understanding some people.
Mmm so many varieties of herring Romig. It was so refreshing to sample a different menu. It was expensive but what the heck! So good to experience something different from the usual.
Thank you Emjay and Romig for your encouragement.
