Re: Oxymorons
Not an oxymoron, but I do hate it when you hear news stories on the tv along the lines of "so-and-so was killed after being involved in a road accident". Such bad luck to be involved in a road accident and then be killed afterwards. Surely killed in or died after?

Don't get me started - but since you have I will restrict myself to just one of my pet hates. Describing things as 'light' when they are exactly the same weight and colour as the presumably 'heavy' alternative. True, they are usually lower in fat - but if that is what they mean, why the **** don't they just call them that??

Oh what have unleashed here! Mind you we were slowing down on oxymorons.
So...... in my yoof we had railway stations and railway tracks. Now it's train stations and train tracks.
When did that happen?
And another one is the expression "for free" as in, for example "pay for two adults and children get in for free"
What's wrong with just "free"

Almost unique is my pet hate. It also grates when announcers pronounce 'sixth' as 'sik'. As for 666, well...

Merv asked " What's wrong with just "free" " ...
Cos gettin free means that free of em gets in for free ... whereas get in for free is much clearer if you are a dimwit or an illegal.
Simples .

You mean you can get Muscat ears four three? (I can speak and spell proper like, without the need of a spool chucker.)

You mean like that line in the Cars' song, Drive, that was played to such devastating effect during Live Aid - "pork pie" (I think what he actually said/sang was "whoa hi")

And Sister Sledge, "We are family", which apparently includes the line ""I want to staple the Vicar"

Re: Oxymorons
I can remember one evening years ago, when the presenters on the news programme 'Nationwide' were discussing a song, the chorus of which sounded like "Sue Lawley, Sue Lawley", - who at the time also worked on this programme. The actual words were "So lonely, so lonely" !
