Re: Free Wifi hotspots in ports
The easiest way to find free WiFi locations in any port is to simply follow crew members. The first thing they want to do when they get off is connect to the internet.
My daughter is currently on board Constellation (dry dock in Freeport) and she headed straight to a bar nearby with her fellow crewmates to get their fix. They buy one drink and make it last hours!

As the majority of bars and cafes in tourist areas now offer free wifi I keep an eye out for stickers in the windows proclaiming this. Alternatively I check the wifi settings on my iPhone to see which networks are operating in the vicinity and if any of their names correspond to a nearby café or bar, or occasionally shopping centre.

The problem sometimes with "following the crew" is that the service can be very slow. I don't know if this is related to the numbers using the "bandwidth??" but we had trouble even getting online in the terminal in Ajaccio - which was where many of the crew were online.

Re: Free Wifi hotspots in ports
We had the same problem recently when Ventura docked in A Coruna. The shopping centre immediately next to the Quay has free wifi but the area outside was full of crew members and passengers trying to access it. It could not cope. I got online in a nearby bar with no problem. When I returned to the ship the crowd had dissipated and there were no problems. Moral; unless you are desperate to get online immediately in such a situation, do so on the way back rather than on the way out.Romig1 wrote:The problem sometimes with "following the crew" is that the service can be very slow. Much as I may appreciate the opportunity to check my emails, I'd rather spend the time onshore doing an excurston than seeking out a wifi hotspot!

I managed to get online with my tablet free from the ship in Lisbon. We were docked portside and there are numerous restaurants/cafes there and I spent the last 2 hours on the balcony surfing the net.Suekersh wrote:Anyone know of a free wifi spot in Lisbon or Madeira.

Where were you berthed, Tinks? We've had two moorings on our three visits to Lisbon - right by the railway station (twice) and further downstream towards the bridge.

There is a 'Free WiFi' app you can download for your iPad. You can search for any city/town you are going to and it will not only show you where but name the places.

I should have mentioned that it also allows you to download the database to use off line.

In Madeira head for McDonalds on the promenade. They have their password posted in the window. There are tables and chairs outside so no need to buy anything. However, I did buy a coffee which was very good and served in a cup rather than a disposable carton.

Also the MacDonalds in Gib next to the Morrisons had the fastest wifi we have ever found when we have been out and about.Silver_Shiney wrote:Gibraltar - a little cafe called Just Desserts on the second floor of the little shopping mall in Casements Square, next to BhS - free wifi, password is fruitcrumble
Just come back from The Baltic and my hubby discovered if you stand next to a hoho bus when it is boarding you have time to download your e-mails. Better still I guess actually get on one lol

Skjolden has a 'Skjolden guest' site that I managed to log onto from my balcony when alongside at the jetty there. Signal was weak though.......

Probably a bit late for you now, Sue, but El Cortes Ingles department store's cafes have free wifi. I picked up WIFI-MADEIRA at several places in Madeira town, but the signal wasn't very strong.

Re: Free Wifi hotspots in ports
I did post this in a different thread, but think it got lost.
So, try again: http://crew-center.com/crew-wifi-locati ... -worldwide
It is for American crews, but it does cover the world.
If you scroll to the bottom of the web page there is a PDF you can download.

Re: Free Wifi hotspots in ports
When leaving from Southampton all the Premier Inns now have free WiFi 24/7 and all have Costa Coffee so for the price of a coffee just relax and log in prior to cruise. Or stand outside.
Would it be too naughty if subscribers were to put any passwords when needed?, the WiFi at Premier inns needs no password just a simple log in at first which is a bit slow but once logged in the speed is reasonable unless you are thinking of downloading War And Peace to watch on a cruise.
