Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Rostock ... we left Artemis early to catch a train to Rostock. Bit of a hike at the other end to get to the Old Town where the aged parts are often concealed in the middle of modern structures but it all blends in quite nicely. Then downhill to the river. Worth a visit but best done in conjunction with the river trip back to Warnemunde.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
There was a riverboat waiting on the quayside that was going to Warnemunde and better still it had a bar on it.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Warnemunde was a real surprise, a delightful walk-a-bout seaside town with a lighthouse plus a restaurant that served us our late lunch of Garlic Prawns, Crusty Bread and a bottle of chilled Riesling.

10 years later on the Arcadia we walked round Warnemunde to see what we had missed - a really lovely seaside town.

I must say the Germans do some lovely statues and thankfully they don't seem to get vandalised. (Mind you, in my experience as an onlooker I don't think the Polizei are very sympathetic to those set out to spoil the country!!!)

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Although it was an awful October day weatherwise we thoroughly enjoyed the passage through the Kiel canal. It was a lovely gentle passage through the German countryside past some absolutely beautiful houses. From time to time there were crossing points with ferries across the canal and everybody seemed very friendly. We entered the locks about 7.00am so the light was not the best, and it didn't improve much as the day wore on!!
At this point it was apparently the tradition that the Captain would don his hat and blow the ship's horn as we passed a wayside restaurant. In return the owner of the restaurant obviously had a sound system on which he blared out God Save the Queen. The transporter bridge after the restaurant was of interest.
Time getting late as we left the canal. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Hamburg tomorrow for anyone who has been there and Mob's excursion to Luneberger Heide?
I have always fancied going to Hamburg, in particular for the model railway attraction but have yet to manage it.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
Hamburg was quite Interesting and part of an all Germany coaching tour that we did many years ago. I think we spent two, possibly three, nights in the Crowne Plaza lakeside Hotel. We arrived via Hamlyn of Pied Piper fame plus Lubeck of marzipan fame. Our stay in Hamburg involved City tours with visits to the main places of interest plus an extensive boat ride. We also witnessed the nightlife one evening but I rather suspect that we may have seen your model railway layout. Huge and covering everything from dockside light railways to Alpine, Express through the Rhur and Mountain railway layouts ... a picture may help as it may have been elsewhere in Germany assuming there could possibly be two.

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
It must have changed here and there over the years but much of the scenery / backdrop and especially so the mining operations did look very familiar so I think that is the one

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
We arrived back in Hamburg on Oriana during a Christmas cruise but this time we took an excursion to the Hanseatic Port of Luneburg, of salt fame.

I cant remember going through Kiel canal but my husband thinks we have during a Baltic cruise going to Warnemunde. He remembers the shipyard where Oriana was built.
What cruise were you on oldbluefox when you took the pics?

Re: Coronavirus Virtual Cruise
We went to Hamburg on the QM2 and one thing I remember is reversing the last couple of miles to the port in the middle of the night because there was nowhere further upstream we could turn. And when we sailed away a party in a hotel on shore played very loud music such as Land of Hope and Glory as we sailed by. Of course slavery hadn't been invented then.

It was Adonia October 2013. I remember we were the last cruise into St Petersburg and by heck, it was cold.
