Re: Welcome to Norway
I’ve heard of far worse reasons to make a stand…fair play to them.

Re: Welcome to Norway
Of course the protesters take the easy option by saying "... that burn asphalt for propulsion and energy." Iona doesn't. And "The ship is registered in some bandit state or in an offshore secondary register " - so Southampton is a bandit state now!!

Some would argue the Norwegian Fiords are as Beautiful as the lagoon in Venice

The not welcome to Norway protesters have the rite to express their opinions, but what is the general feeling of the rest of Norway.

So that’s probably why our itinerary has been changed. Better get a stab vest for next week.

Re: Welcome to Norway
I suppose you can't blame them. I may be wrong, but apart from the alleged omissions issue I don't suppose cruise passengers contribute much to the economy mainly because of the high prices for everything.
I'm still going though

Re: Welcome to Norway
Stephen, you are correct about high prices, but for cruise passengers, the main moan, it's the high cost of alcohol. It may have something to do with the long Norwegian winter nights.
But we have had good service in Cafes where a coffee and cake etc is on par with JL or M&S.
Don't forget to have a slice of apple cake, a traditional cake that you can now get all year, lovely.

Big trouble with some cruise passengers. They are to tight to put there hands in their pockets.
Oh, and get out the wallet and spend money ashore.
Best get Mrs S to get her purse out.

Too right, why spend an absolute rip off fortune on drinks ashore when you can nip back onboard and pay a fraction of the price.
I think it was on our first cruise to Norway in 2018 when we got speaking to a crew member at the cruise booking/excursions place, and they said a beer is equivalent to £17 ….I don’t think so thank you.

Even if passengers spend nothing in shops and bars, there is plenty to be made in port fees and running excursions.

Re: Welcome to Norway
They never seem too bothered whether you buy anything from them or not. Other ports go out of their way to acknowledge your presence and offer 'special' discounts.
Plenty of other places to go for a holiday and whilst I see their point on climate change I'm not sure that damaging their tourist industry is the way to go. Port fees will go, tour guides will go, coach companies and their drivers will go, restaurants used on all day tours will lose out, tour attractions will lose so I hope their economy will be able to pick them up.

Re: Welcome to Norway
On one fjords cruise we encountered a Norwegian woman who flogged tourist tat to the passengers while moaning about cruise ships.

We like to make having a meal 'out', part of our cruise. It's nice to to try local establishments and local cuisine. Depending on where we are going we would pick a couple or three ports, but eat away from the port out of to touristy catchment.

Re: Welcome to Norway
In a way it did .... I recall that it was a fairly tough uphill climb on the way out but oh so much easier with a downward descent on the return to Oriana, then after lunch it was a very flat ride there 'n' back alongside the fjord. I rather suspect that I may have been wearing the coveted yellow top during that particular day but there again ...Onelife wrote: ↑20 Jul 2022, 09:43Did it end in a Tour De France?...Just askingManoverboard wrote: ↑20 Jul 2022, 09:19We hired bikes in Olden at a very reasonable price ... just saying
