1569 First recorded lottery in England was drawn, the sale of the lottery had run since 1566 and instead of tickets all entries were drawn up on scrolls. The proceeds were used to strenghthen the realm of Queen Elizabeth I and to bolster public service.

1693 A powerful earthquake followed by a series of tsunamis destroys parts of Sicily and Malta causing over 60,000 deaths.

1879 The Anglo-Zulu War was fought between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. it lasted until the 4th. of July.

1922 First use of insulin to treat diabetes in a human patient, Frederick Banting, Charles Best and James Collip used bovine insulin extract in Toronto, Canada.

1980 Nigel Short, age 14, from Bolton, Lancashire, became the youngest International Master in the history of chess. Participating in four World Junior Championships, from 1980–1983, Short achieved his best result during his first attempt, in which he was placed second to Garry Kasparov. He was awarded the Grandmaster title in 1984, aged nineteen, the world's youngest grandmaster at that time.

1510 Henry VIII, then just 18 years old, appeared incognito in a jousting tournament at Richmond Park, and was applauded for his jousting before he revealed his true identity.

1895 The National Trust is founded in the United Kingdom.

1899 Unable to launch their lifeboat at Lynmouth because of heavy storms, the crew, horses and helpers dragged their 10 ton lifeboat Louisa and carriage, in the dark, the 15 miles overland to Porlock Weir. The 11 hour journey across Exmoor included a haul over Countisbury Hill (gradient 25% : 1 in 4) followed by descending another 1 in 4 hill down into Porlock where the corner of a househad to be demolished to gain access. Their rescue of the 18 crew from Forrest Hall was successful. The journey was re-enacted in daylight on 12th January 1999.

1967 Dr. James Bedford becomes the first person to be cryonically preserved with intent of future resuscitation.

2001 Sven Goran Eriksson became the first foreign coach of the England football team.

1797 French Revolutionary Wars: A naval battle between a French ship and two British frigates off the coast of Brittany ends with the French vessel running aground, resulting in over 900 deaths.

1832 The death of Thomas Lord, English professional cricketer and founder of Lord's Cricket Ground, spectators to the original cricket ground had to enter via Thomas Lords wine shop, a shrewd business move of the day. 1915 – The 6.7 Mw Avezzano earthquake shakes the Province of L'Aquila in Italy with a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme), killing over 29,000.

1964 Capital Records grudgingly released the first Beatles record, ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand’, in the US to, as they said 'see how it goes’. It became their fastest selling single ever. Within only three weeks, a million copies had been sold.

1968 Johnny Cash performs live at Folsom State Prison.

2004 Dr. Harold Shipman, who is believed to have killed more than 200 of his patients, was found hanged in his prison cell. To date Shipman is the only British doctor to have been proved guilty of murdering his patients, in addition to being one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history.

2012 The passenger cruise ship Costa Concordia is wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy and partially sinks due to the captain's negligence and irresponsibility.

1559 Elizabeth I is crowned Queen of England in Westminster Abbey, she had taken the throne in November of 1588 and reigned until her death on 24th. March 1603 the last of the Tudor monarchs.

1759 The British Museum opens on Great Russel Street London, it now holds over 8 million exhibits.

1790 Fletcher Christian and eight fellow mutineers from the ship Bounty and a number of Tahitian men & women, landed on the remote Pacific island of Pitcairn.

1867 Crowds flocked onto the frozen surface of the lake in London’s Regent's Park during a severe frost. The ice broke, and 40 people died.

1927 BBC radio broadcast the first live commentary of a rugby match. Captain Teddy Wakelam narrated the match at Twickenham, between Wales and England. The following Saturday Wakelam provided the first football commentary from Highbury, where Arsenal was playing Sheffield United.

That's true Alan you have to cross reference facts with other sources of information but is that not true in all cases of written facts.

There are millions of historical reference books out there and you often come up with contradiction of fact including different versions of the Bible.

Like the Rather Suspect Version and the Nearly Infallible Version? :sarcasm: As an aside, there are many claims of biblical contradictions, but none stand up to scrutiny.

1809 Peninsular War: The British defeat the French at the Battle of La Coruña, a worthless victory for the British as they left the city un-defended and the French went in and took it anyway.

1862 Hartley Colliery disaster: Two hundred and four men and boys killed in a mining disaster, it prompted a change in UK law which required all collieries to have at least two independent means of escape.

1909 Ernest Shackleton's expedition finds the magnetic South Pole.

1945 Adolf Hitler moved into his underground bunker, the so-called Führerbunker. It was located beneath Hitler's New Reich Chancellery in Berlin and was the last of the Führer Headquarters to be used by Hitler. It became the epicentre of the Nazi regime and it was here during the last week of April 1945 that Hitler married Eva Braun shortly before they committed suicide.

1950 Listen With Mother began on the radio, the words "Hello children. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin" still ring to my ears.

1957 The Cavern Club opened in Liverpool, it was opened as a jazz club by owner Alan Sytner and the first act was the Merseysippi Jazz Band. The Quarry Men Skiffle Group (including John Lennon) made their first appearance in August and Paul McCartney joined them in October. The first Beatles performance was on 9th February 1961 and featured John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best on drums.

1773 Captain James Cook commands the first expedition to sail south of the Antarctic Circle, it was predicted by the Royal Society that there might be another land Terra Australis beyond the Antartic Circle.

1913 The MCC received a telegram condemming the bodyline bowling tactics of Harold Larwood the Nottinghamshire fast bowler.

1945 The SS begin the evacuation of the Auschwitz concentration camp as Soviet forces close in, the internees were sent on what was later named a death march to stop them from being repatriated by Allied Forces.

1966 A USA B-52 bomber collides with a KC-135 Stratotanker over Spain, killing seven airmen, and dropping three 70-kiloton nuclear bombs near the town of Palomares , Almeria and another one into the sea.. Four of the B52 crew managed to eject and survived, but three were killed and all four of the tanker plane died.
