While thinking about the birth of the NHS system which rolled out to the nation on this day 5th. July 1948 after the passing of the NHS Act of 1946, I thought it might be an idea to have an On This Day page.

It needn't be a time in history but any event that is a fond or maybe even sad memory that forum members want to share.

The BBC introduced its first daily news programme to replace the Newsreel which was often out of date, the news reader was Richard Baker and I can remember watching it on my dads pride and joy a Marconi television that was more a piece of furniture than the telly we know today.

On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Parisian showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.

On this day in 1865 in the East End of London, revivalist preacher William Booth and his wife Catherine establish the Christian Mission, later known as the Salvation Army. Determined to wage war against the evils of poverty and religious indifference with military efficiency, Booth modelled his Methodist sect after the British army, labeling uniformed ministers as “officers” and new members as “recruits.”

Thanks for that interesting input Cubie the bikini is 70 years old today and still creates a lot of interest on the beaches from Skeggy to Bondi Beach.
