Re: On This Day
10th July 1954. Big Party On The Green
Looking at some old photos this morning it reminded me of this day.
Although food rationing had finished a week earlier food was still in short supply but there was a party held on our local green. I can't remember what the celebration was all about but everyone in the neighborhood chipped in and we had a big tent where all the food and drink was kept.
There was a barrel of beer for the adults and the local dairy donated 1/3 pints of orange juice for the kids, my dads family were market traders and managed to get their hands on a load of fruit and this was the first time I had seen a banana in my life.
I remember it was an overcast day but it managed to stay dry and people were dancing and singing to a piano borrowed from the church hall. I remember being able to stay up until really late that night but I think that was to keep an eye on my little brother and baby sister while dad helped to empty the barrel.
It will always be in my memory because I have never seen such happy times enjoyed by so many people since.

I embarked on my first cruise - 'Images of the Mediterranean' on Aurora
But she's had a re-fit since then and I'm looking forward to sailing on her next February, for 45 nights!

Funnily enough the last cruise we did on Aurora was in 2011 and for various reasons didn't enjoy it but we had already decided to leave P&O so I can't say this had anything to do with it.Gill W wrote:I've done 3 further cruises on Aurora.
