Re: On This Day
29th. September.
1650 Henry Robinson opened his Office of Addresses and Encounters in Threadneedle Street later to be the site of the Bank of England.
1829 The Metropolitan Police of London was established it was to be London's first regular police force.
1946 The BBC launched the 'Third Programme', later to become Radio 3.
Births.
1758 Horatio Nelson, was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, a place dear to my wife's heart as her family originate from neighbouring Overy Staithe and we often drink in The Lord Nelson (formerly The Plough).
Her grandfather known locally as Laddie Lane was a local character and seaman, he had fishing boats and also ran the ferry out to Scolt Head. His claim to fame was when he took members of the royal family out to Scolt Head in the 1950's.
1899 László Bíró born in Budapest he patented the ballpoint pen we know today as the Biro, although it was invented by John Jacob Loud in 1888.
1899 Billy Butlin, who founded Butlins holiday camps.
1956 Sebastian Coe, Olympic gold medalist.

Re: On This Day
British 'Bobbies' appeared for the first time in 1829. Named 'Bobbies' or 'Peelers' they were named after Sir Robert Peel. Sue's great Grandfather was one of them.

Re: On This Day
The S S Newton Beech was about 480 miles E S E of Ascension Island when she was stopped. Graf Spee initially flew the French flag only hauling it down and replacing it with the German flag at the last moment. Her Radio Officer Prior managed to send a message, which was received by another ship the Martand, Langsdorf did not sink her until two days later in position 09.35 South 06.30 West., lying in 3500 feet of water.
When I see a ship in a photo just before she is sunk I find it quite sad. My first ship lies at the bottom of the Pacific, having begun to ship water while on passage between San Francisco and Yokkaido with coal. A short life but a hard one.

Some good ones I didn't get there QB. How about a few more,
1948 Millie was born, remember the hit 'My boy lollipop'?
1536 William Tyndale translator of the New Testament was burned at the stake in Belgium.
I think 1917 the battle of Passchendale began.
1959 Jerry Keller released the fabulous song 'Here comes summer', I start singing it when they put the clocks forward at the end of March every year.
1981 Anwar Sadat President of Egypt assassinated by Muslim militants.
1991 Michael Jackson gave away Elizabeth Taylor at her 7th wedding to Larry Fortensky. It lasted until 1997
I'll start on tomorrow's later. I'm a bit whacked having dusted and swept all through downstairs. Well trained, that's me.
