Caribbean from Southampton

Unread post by davecttr »

Anyone been on a Southampton - Caribbean cruise and back?

I am thinking about winter 14/15 and getting a bit bored with the normal Canaries offering. I have flown to the Caribbean but noticed that Oceana has a 24 nighter for Feb 2015. There are 16 sea days! but those extra sea days can be had for very little money indeed. Much less than it would cost to live at home. I am thinking that instead of sitting at home I might as well be sitting on Oceana!.

thoughts?

Hi,

We have done 2 35 night Caribbean Cruises on Oriana and a 24 nighter on Oceana.

They are lovely relaxing cruises and you visit some lovely locations.

We would highly recommend them.

Sounds good to me Dave ... go for it !!!

We have done many Xmas cruises out of Southampton to the Caribbean and those sea days are lovely to just chill and relax.

It is usually Madeira or the Azores that you stop at on the way out/back and you will find it will get considerably warmer once you leave there and head for the Caribbean, not really much of a decision I know what I would do :D

The january cruise clashes with visiting family over xmas and new year so if i do book it will be the february one.

I imagine the atmosphere will be quite sedate with an older demographic and hardly any children?

I am about to do a detailed cost comparison with a Ventura fly cruise.

Our very first cruise was a Caribbean roundtrip from Southampton on the Aurora. It was 21 days and we loved it. My husband always claimed he would get stir crazy on a ship and had always resisted gong on a cruise. Guess who loves them now, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the sea days.We are going again next year. :D

Well all those extra nights cost £13 per night compared with a 14 night fly cruise. A bargain I think. If the shareholder credit still applies then i will be paying £105 per night which IMO is reasonable even with the dreaded single supplement. The equivalent for the Ventura fly cruise is £170 per night.

Done the 22 night round trip twice:

Canberra 1990 and Oriana 2010.

Highly enjoyable, even on the Canberra.

One thing that I have noticed with a Caribbean round trip is that the ship takes on a different atmosphere than on a two week Med cruise. It is far more relaxed and when we have done them there has been more daytime entertainment/activities.

A great choice Dave.

We've done the Caribbean 3 times; round trip, as part of a 35 night, and part of a circumnavigation, and we will do it again.

Well done you - I am sure you will enjoy it - I love the cruises across to the Caribbean and back - so relaxing and last November on Aurora I went to art classes - so many days at sea to unwind and you are right Smurfy the atmosphere is more relaxed somehow. Feel quite envious now

We`ve done the last two 35 day round trip to the Caribbean on Oceana and are doing the 28 day one in Jan 2014 which if it`s like the previous two will be great, very relaxing and weather normally warm enough for shorts and tee shirt after 2 days a sea. Don`t understand why P&O have reduced the cruise to 28 days for next year though as it cuts down on the time in the Caribbean! Lots of pax have done the same cruises and I gather there will be a good many on the next one,so it speaks for itself.

We too are on R318 next month - Aurora also our favourite ship. This will be our fourth Caribbean round trip and I echo what has been said about the more relaxed atmosphere on board on these cruises. Wish they'd bring back a steel band on board though as this really did get one in the mood for the Caribbean.

Very interesting reading this as we have booked on the Arcadia one ,going in November. Hopefully all the above still applies.
Do they have better speakers on these , as you are more of a captive audience. I have nothing against the speakers I have listened to on other cruises, I just wondered if P and O push out the boat a little more.
Any comments on Arcadia doing a transatlantic please post......Longest time I would have been away from land..... :o unless Atlantis makes an appearance.
