Out of all this madness it is good to see that Ukrainian authorities retain a sense of humour

As the sanctions bite deeper and deeper, there will be change.
It’s a long term strategy.
It won’t stop Putin’s invasion but will eventually remove him.
No commerce
No finance
No sport
Total isolation
Not sure that it will as simple as that.

Watching the news last night is was quite worrying to see that many Russians believe everything that is broadcast on the state controlled TV and believe that the "war" with Ukraine is justified.

One thing that I am impressed by in the Ukraine conflict is the reporting by the UK media who carry on reporting not knowing how, or when, they will get out.

It would not surprise me if Zelensky was given the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
He would well deserve it.
Whilst I applaud what he is doing, I dont really think that offering arms to everyone and recommending they use Molotov cocktails on the Russian invaders makes him a true peace prize candidate.

We’ll, in regards to my earlier post re energy costs.
After watching the news at lunchtime and seeing the costs rising by the minute I renewed my contract…it has risen by just shy of £300 since the last quote.🤬
I was paying shy of £1k, it is now slightly over £2k 🤬🤬
A jump from £87pm to £173. 🤬🤬🤬
I chose the fixed after listening to the scenario of the costs rising even more and often.

It does make you wonder how some are going to be able to afford it.

It will certainly speed up the Wests switchover to renewable electric supply, and it should lead to a renewed demand for more drilling for north sea gas, and maybe even a start to fracking. I know the latter is not very green, but we are going to need to use gas for many years to come before everyone is switched over to heat pumps.

They may well believe that at the moment but it will change.
Apple Pay, Visa and Mastercard have withdrawn as well as virtually every western brand.
Anyone who has been there knows that they love the western products.
So, no internet shopping unless you use debit cards.
As goods run out in shops that sell luxury goods, they cannot be replenished.
No holidays.
Russian middle class love their holidays.
No sports.
Russia love their sport.

The problem is that the Ukrainians do not have time.

I was reading earlier that all Russian schoolchildren will have to watch a propaganda TV program today which will justify what Russia is doing in Ukraine

Unfortunately that cause is lost David.
Ukraine will fall eventually unless Russia has a change of mind very soon.
The point of sanctions is to change regime.
We’ve all been to St.Petersburg and have seen with our own eyes how much they love western goods.
The shopping malls are huge.
They have missed tourism due to covid and it will continue assuming that no ships dock there.
Even when this war is over, the west must continue with sanctions until Putin has no choice left because the people rise up.
Change in Russia can only come internally.
No trade equals no foreign currency equals financial catastrophe.
Western countries are even self boycotting Russian oil which is currently $18 a barrel cheaper than Brent.
The Russian government will spin it as the evil west hating Russia.
That only works for so long when people realise that it’s not only the west, but the world.

Do you think he will stop at Ukraine? I can see him going into other countries, especially those that were once part of the USSR. In many ways he will get away with invading Ukraine. He don't care about sanctions. No one inside the Kremlin will oppose him because they will suddenly disappear along with their families. He's a very dangerous nutter. What's next.

Sanctions are all well and good but It's time for boots on the ground to help these people out.

The world is making all the right noises but doing little to assist in a military capacity.

I don't believe so, the west has shown that it is impotent against Russia, so basically until he attacks a NATO country it is unlikely that anything will be done. At that point we will probably get dragged into another world war ... some narcissistic psychopathic leaders have learned nothing from history.

Not necessarily. If Russia was to be expelled from the UN and the UN could get a resolution past China then there are grounds for the UN to go in

The next World War will be a nuclear war. I get the bit about NATO but they won't even make Ukraine a 'no fly zone' because that would mean if we shot down a Russian plane that would give him the excuse he needs to attack the west.

Then let us hope that China Vetoes it ...

The last thing we need are umpteen dead and wounded blue helmeted peace keepers strewn about the countryside. This is Russian not Bosnia that we are dealing with here.
