On a local chat show earlier today they were interviewing various politicians, community groups etc. and they were very split on whether a no fly zone should be imposed. However it was comments from John Simpson, who is currently in Ukraine, that makes me think that it is not the right way to go.

He was saying that the many Ukrainians he has been talking to do not want this to end up in another World War, nor do they want Ukraine to be seen as the reason for it turning into another World War (with the obvious huge cost of life). What they are asking for are the tools and weaponry so that they can fight against Putin's attack on Russia. Many refer to this as Putin's army not the Russian army.

Another point he made was that many of the Russian soldiers have relatives living in Ukraine ... it does not sit well with them since they effectively bombing their own families.

so basically until he attacks a NATO country it is unlikely that anything will be done.
Not necessarily. If Russia was to be expelled from the UN and the UN could get a resolution past China then there are grounds for the UN to go in
Good point ... but a couple of very very big 'if's there.

There may be another way as well

Surely if Russia was expelled from the UN they would be unlikely to let UN peacekeepers in to oversee a cease fire or anything. Much as I would love to see Russia lose in Ukraine I think that is highly unlikely. Sooner or later Russia will succeed in suppressing all opposition, but just what sort of regime they will put in place, and whether they would repair the infrastructure is anyone's guess. I just hope that when Putin realises that the West is not prepared to allow Ruussia to return to normal trade, he does not throw the rest of his toys out of the pram and decide to continue his westward advance.

I would just like to throw in this to the Ukrainian debate. So, NATO are reluctant to get involved due to the threat imposed by Putin’s nuclear threat/bluff, and yet we are imposing the severest sanctions which in time will bring Russia to its knees, great if it gets rid of Putin but what happens if it doesn’t? Would he be more or less likely to start a nuclear war if his country remains paralysed by such sanctions?

Long live Ukraine.

With someone so unstable anything could happen. The one giller of hope is that unless the sanctions affect him personally he is not bothered about the impact on the rest of the country.

Interesting article from the BBC website giving some alternatives to the ending of this assault on Ukraine.

I favour ‘Putin Ousted’ probably by the ‘Oligarchs’ who, when seeing their revenue streams cut off will be more than happy to pay for the bullet that gets rid of this nutter.

They were saying on the radio earlier that Putin's favourite band is the Beatles. They played a clip of him singing one of their songs (I can't remember which one.) Perhaps Paul McCartney could pay him a visit. I wonder which sing he would sing?

I think Rubber Bullet was 10cc, Rubber Soul was a Beatles album, but not a track.

Actually any bullet would suffice.

Just read an article where Russian soldiers captured by the Ukranians are being allowed to phone home and a relative is being allowed to come down and collect them. If only more people were as civilised.

Such a a huge dichotomy between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Putin ... Zelenskyy has showered himself, his country and its people in international admiration and respect ... Putin has brought shame on himself, Russia and its citizens, that he only sees as cannon fodder.

Putin will probably go down in history as a thug and mass murderer, another mad Russian ... maybe Boney M will reform to make another hit ... altogether now ...

Ra Ra crass Putin,
murderer on the Russian scene
There was a pratt that really was gone
Ra Ra crass Putin,
Russias maddest killing machine
It was a shame how he carried on

Ra ra crass Putin
murderer on the Russian scene
He didn't quit, he was the head
Ra ra crass Putin
Russias maddest killing machine
He should be shot until he is dead

Oh, those Russians

I like the idea suggested by the Lib Dems of confiscating properties owned by the Russian oligarchs and using them to house Ukranian refugees.

I feel so sorry for Ukriane and understand their President's frustration that Nato won't implement a no fly zone. But I also inderstand why they can"t do it. I have no doubt it would inevitably lead to World War 3.

I agree, however it must be galling for the Ukranian president when NATOs Sec General now says that if Russia attacks any NATO country or "our friends in the region", they will feel the full might of NATO.

It comes to something when one person can invade a sovereign nation, reduce it to rubble and then threaten the west with a nuclear strike if we don’t lift the sanctions…watch this space!

A Russian friend of mine who owns a dive school in Malta has told me that Russian people are attempting to leave in droves.
Many through Finland and many going to Turkey.
