Just for your information "Winners Bar" looks nothing like a Lap-dancing club...Oop’s please don’t tell my wife I’ve said that

Dear Polished One,

We are taking our first cruise on Oceana next Whit holiday...7 nights around the Bay of sickbay...I take it from your post that I will find her agreeable. Please enlighten me as to what makes her so wonderful.

Your servant Sir.....

Dear Sir

I would not dare to be so presumptious as to say you would find the Oceana agreeable just because I lilke her.

I've posted some photos for your delectation.

Oceana has the reputation of being the friendliest ship in the fleet. We've certainly found her to have a very friendly atmosphere.

It is said that she has the best atrium in the fleet - I think it is stunning.

We consider the facilities to be excellent. She is easy to get around - the two theatres, pub (Yacht and Compass), Tiffany's, photo-gallery, art gallery, library, card room, Le Club and Magnums champagne bar are all on the Promenade deck (7). The casino, Winners' Bar (which is what I would imagine a lap-dancing club to look like), and Cafe Jardine are upstairs at the top of the atrium. Deck 6 has the shops and the Club dining restaurant (Adriatic). Deck 5 has the Freedom dining restaurant, reception and the Explorers bar at the foot of the atrium.

My only complaint is that there has been insufficient indoor seating, but this will have been alleviated with the revamp of Le Club, which is altogether much lighter during the day. I don't know what it is like in the evenings as we have always tried to find a seat in Tiffany's on Deck 7.

We first went on her in 2007. Prior to that, we did a transatlantic on the QM2 in 2004 and, to be honest, I was very disappointed for the first few days. It was then explained to me that an ocean liner is a totally different animal to a cruise ship. Once I'd got my head around that, I found that I loved the Oceana and, in fact, I now prefer her to the QM2, lovely as that ship is.

I hope you will enjoy your cruise.

Kind regards
Thanks Alan. I'm sure we will enjoy Oceana just as we have Oriana, Aurora and Azura. Mrs AOTH had decided that we would be having a bit of a financial rest in 2014, but this little 7 nighter came up at a price that was too good to ignore.

Regards
Rob

Can't remember the skipper's name, but on our cruise on Oriana earlier this year, he said that there was no way Pedro that Oriana would be leaving the fleet to make room for the new beast. So that's it then, it will be Oriana. :D

I voted for Oceana. Although she was the PandO ship we cruised on, and therefore hits the sentimentality button, I prefer the other ships. :)

My choice was Oriana because I believe she will be the easiest to sell to someone like Fred Olsen.

Oh should have added, I had an email this morning from P&O and the new ship is called Britannia.

Azura badly planned, have to use one lift walk along deck 7 then another lift to get to back of ship. Also the club show lounge the worst design ever, only OK if you want to watch the live act on TV. The sea screen, well don't start me off on that.

You don't have to, if you walk along your corridor to the aft lifts you can go straight there, saves you a lift journey and you can have a good nosey into other folks cabins at the same time.

Sadly, I think it'll be Oceana.

If it was my decision, it'd be Oriana, but I can't see them doing it, can you imagine the howl of protest that would cause.

I think are referring to the Oriental on deck 6?

Have freedom dining - I've just spent 24 days on Azura without having to go anywhere near the Oriental!

Just returned yesterday from my first cruise on Oriana. We absolutely loved her. I did ask one of the staff if they thought a ship would go and they said there were no plans to get rid of any of them, although I realize things can change.

We enjoyed everything about the ship. I thought her decor was easy on the eye, nicely traditional and not glitzy. Easy to find your way around. Liked the Terrace Pool at the stern. The Crows Nest was well attended every evening, which I have found not to be the case on other ships.

Entertainment was excellent. I even enjoyed the magician which is unusual for me, but this one was hilarious - bit like Tommy Cooper style.

So I haven't voted, because I don't think a ship is going. There was a general moan at the announcement on board of the name of the new ship with everybody around us saying they wouldn't be sailing on a monster of that size. The girl on the loyalty desk also agreed that they were having a nightmare with Getaway fares, as nobody was booking early.

I'm so glad that you posted that Lioness, because we are on her for the first time shortly and I was getting a bit worried with most saying she had to go. She may be an old girl but hopefully still has the class ( a bit like mrs barney )

We've previously travelled on the Arcadia & Oceana and like them both very much (Arcadia just edging it)

I'm very much looking forward to a late holiday

Hi Barney, glad I put your mind at rest. I cannot see what's not to like about her. Great cinema which we used twice. Lovely theatre. She's not an old girl to us. We sailed to the Caribbean and back on Athena, built in 1939!! We loved her too.

Azura and Ventura are fine ships, big but fine. No freedom dining on Arcadia but with that large swimming pool she must stay. Oceana with the added excitement of will I get stuck in a lift again today, must stay. Narrows it down for me to one of the remainder.

We've never had a problem with the lifts on Oceana, nor have we heard of any whilst on board. :o

Not that I heard of anyone becoming stuck, but on our first trip on Oceana, one of the after lifts was frequently out of action, however on our 2nd trip (post refit) they all seemed to be behaving themselves.

I did wonder though, what might have happened that several plumbers were named in the list of crew members that had provided exceptional service over the previous month. :problem:

Oriana was our least favourite ship. The dining room at the stern was noisy and had quite a tremor leading to cutlery dancing across the plate. When we were on her we had a couple of breakdowns, once where the engines stopped and the emergency lights came on. We also had a small engine fire which sent the crew rushing. I know ships must break down at some point but it seemed it all happened on Oriana and this has probably coloured my own impressions of her.

My personal favourites are Oceana and Aurora - not too big, not too small, both have a teak wrap around prom deck, just right.
I was taught to be cautious

We weren't all that keen on Oriana either - but I'm not sure why. We had one three day trip on her and then another which was a week in the Fjords a few years ago. We haven't been on her since she became adult only and if an itinerary came up on her which we wanted to do then we would go back. Still not sure why we weren't keen!

The ship I really don't like is Arcadia which I know is lots of people's favourites. She doesn't seem to have a heart to me. There's no real atrium, no hub to the ship. Now they have introduced Freedom dining and allocated the upper Meridian restaurant to that would give me another reason to dislike it. We were on the upper level both times which was good. However, when I was on her with a friend a year ago we ate breakfast and lunch several times in the lower level - once at the aft of the ship. There was so much noise that one couple on the table left breakfast before finishing saying they couldn't stand it any more. Don't know if it's still like that.

So in a roundabout way to answer the original question which ship would I like to go - probably Arcadia - which one do I think would go - well until recently I would have said Oceana (lover her, one of our favourites) but now with the new Britannia coming I'm not sure. When it's Britannia and Azura in the Caribbean over the winter and with Oceana doing summer fly cruises to the Med. I wonder if they would consider getting rid of Ventura? Who knows!

We quite like Oriana, she has a classy feel about her but doesn't have enough balcony cabins. Aurora and Oceana are our favourites but Arcadia is acceptable. Azura we absolutely hated so we won't be trying Ventura or Britannia. Adonia is possibility if something cheap pops up.

So if any ship has to go it would be Britannia for us, followed by Azura then Ventura.
