Variants can work well as long as you deviate. For instance you may pick some 'root' password and add digits or letters based on the site you are on or maybe capitalise different letters. The Tinker wrote:Ok - have inwardly digested the rules - can we reuse an old password after the 180 days next is up and can you remind us what our passwords are if we forget. Sorry Ken - all my passwords are variants of the same although not the bank ones (you will not be getting your hands on my money lol)
Always make sure that your email and bank passwords are unique ... as a minimum.
I remember my mother used to use the same PIN on all her cards, when I told her off she complained that she could not remember them. As I told her, you don;t have to remember them, there are 16 numbers on the front of the card use a pattern and if you forget the PIN you only need to look at the front of the card. For instance pick the first number out of each gorup of 4 numbers, or pick the first number from group 1, the second from group 2 etc.

That's quite a clever system for remembering PINs using the card numbers themselves. I like!Kendhni wrote:Variants can work well as long as you deviate. I used to work as a bank cashier and I lost count of the number of times that I saw people who had actually written their PIN down on the signature strip! I kid you not...

Re: Forum Rules
Goodness! I have so much trouble trying to remember passwords, that I keep getting locked out. Most of the time I use the same password, with perhaps a change of number at the end. Even that causes problems. My bank has never made me change my password, thank goodness.
As for PIN numbers I use the same one for everything. Otherwise I would never be able to use any of my cards!!!!! Rant over.

Is it just me or has anyone found that clicking on 'Forum Rules' at the top left of the screen says the connection is broken?

Re: Forum Rules
Ken, most financial websites and other sites like Sky have security systems which seem to prevent browsers saving passwords, however for all the other sites I visit I am quite happy to let my browser store these details, without it I am certain I would lose access to most sites as I forget which of my variants I used to set it up.Kendhni wrote:John are you being serious .. NEVER EVER let your broswer fill in passwords automatically (especially for banks or personal sites). If you want to do that install something like 'LastPass'. Most such sites these days will not automatically complete passwords.JOHNTHED0G wrote:Who does? I have trouble remembering the one/s I do use...Google Chrome is handy it auto fills them!Dennis The Menace wrote:Change password every 180 days. Blimey, I don't even do that with my bank.
Why is this I wonder..the new password?
My party trick is usually being able to tell people their most private passwords within 30 seconds of logging onto their computer ... because they let the browser auto-fill them in and browsers do NOT hold them securely. Worse still is they use the same or similar passwords for all their sites .. that is just as stupid as using the same PIN number for all your credit cards.

As long as you do not use the same password as you do for your bank sites you should be OK. However, if you ever clear out your caches you could lose all those passwords.towny44 wrote:Ken, most financial websites and other sites like Sky have security systems which seem to prevent browsers saving passwords, however for all the other sites I visit I am quite happy to let my browser store these details, without it I am certain I would lose access to most sites as I forget which of my variants I used to set it up.
It became obvious that users were (and still are) very lax in how they treat passwords, especially when they saved them in their browsers (as I said that is totally insecure and anybody can find them in a few seconds of getting access to your keyboard ... or remote access). HTML then added a new directive 'autocomplete' which defaults to 'on' (so things will be completed) but pretty much any secure site now sets that flag to 'off' which stops the password from being auto completed. However that does not mean that passwords stored previously have been removed from the browser cache, they could well still be in there .. but they are no longer used. Secondly some people still use older browsers which do not handle this directive properly and could still store and retrieve your passwords.

Wow - these are very severe! I don't think I've ever read rules attempting to regularise punctuation.

I assume your question is to me? Apologies if not the case. As to the question:
g. Members should post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing". That is members should not post excessive numbers of emoticons, large, small or coloured text, etc. Similarly members should not SHOUT or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts. Members consistently abusing this may be warned.

Re: Forum Rules
I didn't read it as trying to regularise punctuation but rather to point out that things like ! or ? would not be acceptable if someone for instance kept their finger on the sign and went across the page with it, it has been known for people to do that, I'm afraid I'm one of the offenders of using ! although usually only two or three.
It has always been accepted that capital letters denote someone is SHOUTING, I think most T&C mention that.

Re: Forum Rules
Thanks for clarifying sumdumbloke.
I think the operative word here is 'excessive'. Certainly I see no attempt to 'regularise punctuation' but, on the contrary, there are certain protocols which the forum wants to adopt. Basically the rule is asking members of the forum to write in a manner consistent with 'normal writing'. Maybe you are reading more into this than is intended.
My apologies if I misread you.

Hi sumdumbloke and welcome to the forum.sumdumbloke wrote:Wow - these are very severe! I don't think I've ever read rules attempting to regularise punctuation.
The rules are to try to set boundaries and guidelines from day 1 to stop some of the 'excesses' that have been experienced in the past. The rule you point out is actually quite common ... it is nothing more than an attempt to try to make the board a bit more readable and friendly to its users.
