I bought a load of cheap third-party Epson-type cartridges a while back. They had a clear side so you could see the amount of ink in them. The software told me that the cartridges were empty when they were still nearly half-full and nothing would persuade it otherwise. They're expensive, but I always buy Epson cartridges.
