Trying to compare Theresa to the likes of Burley would indeed be an insult. I don’t believe anyone on this forum would see any similarities between them whatsoever, irrespective of their prejudices.Gill W wrote: 08 Dec 2020, 21:32Oh come on Keith, that’s OTTOnelife wrote: 08 Dec 2020, 21:29https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD8Kw9ceuuY

You’d have gone loopy if anybody spoke like that about Theresa!

Re: Current Affairs
Andrew Neil is miles in front of anyone else when it comes to political interviews, in my opinion.
That's why I said at the time that the Tories were wise not to put Johnson up for a pre-election interview with him, given that he destroyed the others with forensic questioning.
It will be interesting to see him on the new News channel , when outside of the constraints of the BBC.
They do however walk a fine line between being questioning and just being downright rude.
Sophie Ridge usually gets it right.
Piers Morgan rarely does and that's why they are always struggling to get politicians to interview.
Andrew Marr seems to have lost his edge and appears to concentrate on the next question rather than to the answer to the previous one.
He misses many open goals.

Just for clarification, I'm not sexist. I dislike Peston as much as I dislike Burley.
Maybe Sky will use this as an excuse to dump her. I believed the audience dropped when she took over the early slot.

Neither am I Merv. It's a figment of Gill's imagination but it made my wife laugh. On the law of averages since there are more women presenters in the media than men it stands to reason more will be liked or disliked. And Peston goes into my disliked list, as I have mentioned before so nothing new there.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 13:33Just for clarification, I'm not sexist. Need to find another name for 'Essex girl' as they have the saying dropped by one of the dictionaries.
Another saying soon to become un PC.?

This is a genuine question and it is not directed at you in particular, but at the forum as a whole.oldbluefox wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 13:42Neither am I Merv. Over several months I've seen some very personally derogatory posts about some of the female journalists. Indeed, there have been a couple that I have nearly reported under forum rule 1D, but I decided not to, as it was just too much trouble.
Robert Peston, although disliked, doesn't get nearly as much personal vitriol as, for example, Beth Rigby.
This is why I think there might be some sexism going on, even if it's unintentional.
If I start seeing posts about Peston's appearance and personal characteristics, I will believe that all are being treated equally !

Question is.? Why do some women think it’s the right thing or even expect men to do it.?

Re: Current Affairs
Depends on the circumstances. I might smile in acknowledgment or say something like no problem. Just the same as if I was holding the door for a woman. It’s no big deal, just people being polite to other peopleGill W wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 16:19What do you say when you hold the door open for a man and he thanks you?screwy wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 13:48I ain’t either.!

Personally, I think it’s the right thing for people to hold the door for other people, it’s just common politeness. I hope for common politeness from other people whether they are men or women.screwy wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 16:56I always say thank you ,regardless, because I’m a gent.

Re: Current Affairs
I love the way some people sail through without even glancing at the person holding the door open, let alone offering thanks.
As Gill says, it is common courtesy to glance behind when going into, say, a shop and holding the door, regardless of gender.

Those who sail through without a glance are just plain rude and I always promise I won't be holding the door any more. I can't do it although if they don't acknowledge in any way I give them a nice friendly "You're welcome" as they sail past which sometimes gets some funny looks.
I was brought up to believe even if you haven't got much money you can have good manners.

Johnson is a man. There is only him. He is the only PM we currently have. If we had a man and woman doing the same job and I heaped derogatory remarks on a daily basis on one and not the other, then I could be accused of sexism, unintentional or otherwise.oldbluefox wrote: 09 Dec 2020, 22:23........and you wouldn't want to be accused of unintentional sexism would you?![]()
As we only have him, there’s no opportunity for sexism.
And I don’t even make constant derogatory marks based on his looks and character.

If not you must be the only remainer who doesn't, on this and other forums he is constantly accused of lying and cheating, and being a buffoon who has no idea what he is doing.Gill W wrote: 10 Dec 2020, 09:24Johnson is a man. Re: Current Affairs
slanderous comment removed ... he gives every appearance of being a buffoon, so people will comment on this.
However, I don’t think it’s necessary to keep on day after day, in the most unpleasant terms.
I could understand people being upset, if I called him a lazy, sexually incontinent, shambling, mop headed sack of spuds (or similar) on a regular basis.
However, I don’t do that - I don’t think it’s appropriate.
That’s why it jars when I see people on this forum speaking in a derogatory way about other people.

Re: Current Affairs
I tend to agree with your assessment of Johnson but having said that, in my opinion, he is a situational PM.
He will see Brexit through and then ride off into the sunset, write his column and book, make a mint doing the speaker circuit, and leave the politics to the grown ups.
I’m more concerned about how Starmer is not making any impact on the political stage.
So far, he and his front bench have been very underwhelming.
He may well be another one gone by the next election.
