Friends & Foes
Whilst I understand the overall concept and mechanics, I am puzzled why one should still be able to receive PMs from a Foe. Surely both visibility of open postings and PMs should be blocked from those one does not wish to hear from?

oddly enough, you can also see blocked posts if you reply and scroll down underneath your post, you can see all the previous replies, blocked or not and also when they are "quoted" by others
mind you it does make a conversation look odd, if half the posts are blocked

Re: Friends & Foes
Derek,
If that were to be the case then there would be those who would make ' Foes ' of some, if not all, of the Admin Team ... and that would never do of course
You could delete it/them without reading it/them but the sender would know that you had accessed it/them because it/they would move from his/her Outbox Folder to his/her Sent Folder.

Re: Friends & Foes
I've never understood the need for the 'foes' option. It really does not matter to me. However if I felt I had so many foes then maybe I would have a good long look at myself. In any case you're never going to please all of the people all of the time (especially as a mod) but the need to set up foes has never even entered my head.
We'll see how the footie season goes and a certain Watford supporter may go in my book!!

I didn't realise that I just assumed it would block someone totally but I haven't blocked anyone so haven't put it to the test. The Monocled Mutineer wrote:Whilst I understand the overall concept and mechanics, I am puzzled why one should still be able to receive PMs from a Foe. All I would say is, if you are receiving unwelcome pm's then ask admin if they can have a word with the person sending them.

Nor me in all honesty although I can see a benefit if used to keep two sparring partners apart.oldbluefox wrote:I've never understood the need for the 'foes' option ... :

Oh for goodness sake Degsy, you're a grown man! Are you so intolerant of others that you have made them foes so you can't read their posts? And if you get a pm from someone and you don't want to read it then don't open it. This is a cruise forum, not Broadmoor, nobody's going to hide a shank in a pm

I've just realised that I'm probably in Degsy's list of foes so I was talking to myself and in case anyone's wondering, I'd sooner go and watch the gooners play than send old Degsy a pm

I have been familiarising myself with some of the features on offer. I have neither marked any member as a friend or foe.
With the latter, not even you.

I can understand why you should not be able to block admin/moderators PMs, although I am opposed to the concept of a moderator who participates in the forum like any other member.
At least one member/moderator has already objected to my socio-economic term I apply to the majority of smokers which indicates a bias which is both censorious and anti free speech.

Purely for completeness ...The Monocled Mutineer wrote:... At least one member/moderator has already objected to my socio-economic term I apply to the majority of smokers which indicates a bias which is both censorious and anti free speech.
It also indicates to those Members of this Board who have expressed genuine concerns about such terms that we take their concerns into account.

Their concerns should not override an opinion they may disagree with.
I read opinions that I have concerns about but I do not have the arrogance to insist such opinion is removed. It's called free-speech, notwithstanding directed abuse and racist and homophobic views.

Re: Friends & Foes
Sorry but I don't see what being a member/moderator has to do with a person objecting to the use of your term socio-economic, in my opinion the term is equally as offensive as the one you have been asked to reconsider using, just because someone is also a moderator doesn't and shouldn't exclude them from having a personal opinion.
I don't believe anyone is biased or trying to censor free speech but I do believe some of the terminology you use will upset other members, perhaps you need to think of a more subtle way of putting your message across, have a go at the smokers, the ones that ignore the dress codes, the children who shouldn't be allowed in certain areas (iyo) by all means but I'm sure you can do this without the use of l**** w****** or s**** e******** or any other disparaging term.
We have, in the main had a very harmonious forum for nearly six months, I for one would like to see it remain so as I'm sure others would.

Mr Kane
your opinions are your own, but as you continue to try to bait people with your use of derogatory remarks and deliberate use of descriptions people find offensive, you confirm a point made earlier on this forum, that you are a wind up merchant and this is somewhat at odds with the jovial buffoon seen on you-tube
which begs the question, which is the real Derek Kane, as I am fairly sure you do not speak to people you meet in real life, the way you do on here
perhaps your keyboard is a good shield but in public you are not quite so outspoken? or quite so brave?

Dark Night:
I fail to see why it is offensive to take the view that the majority of smokers (smokers only being circa 22% of the population) are now drawn from a social class that I am now prohibited from using as a term on this forum. The use of such term does not mean that EVERY smoker is drawn from such a class and readers shooud not be so inadequate as to believe it applies to either them, a member of their family or a friend.
I note that you perilously stand on the edge of being directly offensive to me (wind-up merchant, buffoon) so please take care with your future postings.
As for not being "quite so outspoken" or "[not] quite so brave", in the public arena there is always a balance to be struck between voicing opinion, discretion and manners. Perhaps the boot is on the other foot by you posting "as you do" with no reference to your name in the "cloak" of a "Superhero" comic character and descibing yourself as a Rottweiler.

Re: Friends & Foes
There is no reason why the forum should not be harmonious if members accept, respect, and treat each other as they would if they met in real life. People have the choice NOT to self-elect to be offended by general comments. I do not altogether accept that it is the comments made by Derek, it's probably more to do with the fact that it is Derek who has made them. Simply put, members can ignore what they don't like, instead of trying to be back-seat moderators. Ignore, unless one is subject to deliberate named abuse and targeting which are by far the biggest causes of forum unpleasantness.
