From what I can remember there's very little at Mydal. I think there is a gift shop and a cafe. Cafe Rallaren it is called(google it as they have a website) you can order a packed lunch from them. I think you can hire bikes from the station and then return at the bottom back in flam but I maybe wrong on this. There's the usual other facilities such as toilets and waiting room.
I'd be surprised if you were not allowed to stay on the train and return back to flam as the train basically goes up and then back down. It's what we did. I think it was about 25 mins between arrival and going back down. When is it you are going to flam? It maybe worth checking which other ships are in that day and whether you are tendering in. If you book an early train you may not get off the ship in time as I've known priority given to people on organised trips to get off first.

Hi Phantom Menace
Have checked Flam port authority website and we are shown as the only ship in port that day.Had considered getting off ship quickly as train station right next to ship but think your advice about pre purchasing tickets better idea. Agree with what you say re trains as Flam railway shows the train arriving at Myrdal and departing 10 minutes later. In fact on P & O excursions it informs passengers to remain on board as train turns around. The Flam railway booking website appears to show number of seats available on each train but as an example it shows 20 seats available going to Myrdal but no seats available on the return train back to Flam. Bit confused. May e mail them.

Re: Flam railway
It's quite possible that the train coming down may be full. We bought our own tickets as soon as the ship docked. We were on Balmoral which is quite a small ship and the only other ship in that day was the Discovery, even smaller than ours. There were plenty of seats going up but we made the mistake of getting off the train at Myrdal and when we got back on all the seats were taken by the people who had joined from the main line train. We had to stand all the way down.

Re: Flam railway
My understanding of the way the flam rail works is that there are x amount of seats that are pre-book able to groups of 10. Once they are sold then no more can pre-booked. This is taken from flam booking.com.
"The trains on the Flåm Railway have 525 seats. Normally up to 370 of these may be reserved by groups of (minimum) 10 persons. Reservations are required and included in the ticket price. Travellers who are not on an organised tour are welcome to use one of our reservation-free carriages designated for individual passengers."
This means anyone who bought tickets like we did from a machine or as we intend to this year, from an iphone app, would sit in the reservation free carriages. This doesn't guarentee you a seat. If a seat is vital to you I would remain in the carriage at Mydal for the return journey. People on organised trips will be in different carriages to you.

Hi rita17
I agree with what you say. The Flam railway joins the Bergen/Oslo line and that would explain the reason that there were no tickets available on certain trains.
Phantom menace, we will buy our tickets at Bergen and stay on board at Myrdal. Many thanks to everyone for their help. Much appreciated
