Alta and the Northern Lights
I would really like to book the Northern lights cruise on Oriana in March 2014 and that would be my main reason for booking that particular cruise, but am I guaranteed to see them?? and if not, what is there at Alta (3days port visit) that would interest someone like me, who hates the cold weather and would not do a dog sleigh ride. Would I see lots of wildlife like polar bears and whales?

Re: Alta and the Northern Lights
We have booked this cruise. 1st March 2014. We honestly don't know what to expect. We hope to see the lights of course and researching the internet it seems that Alta and Tromso give us the best chance. I hate the cold too, but will purchase thermal underwear, ski jackets and snow boots and hope for the best. It looks an interesting cruise, and something a bit different. It also looks as though cabins are selling fast.

No guarantee at all but the longer you are in the region the better your chances. March will have 12 hour nights. Any later and the sky would be too bright.

We were in Alta July last year and there is nothing much to see apart from the rock carvings. Most people did not even get off the bus, it was the only port that we did which was disappointing when we cruised on Adonia to the North Cape.

My Partner and I are on this trip. We have been sent good brochures from the Tourist boards, we are keen photographers so sure there will be lovely pics to take. We have been fortunate in finding ski jacket and trousers in charity shops, also excellent bargain in Pavers for good boots for snow. As we are not ski folks we did not want to buy expensive things - although judging from the weather recently here we may get to use them !!!! We have been checking temperatures recently - it certainly will be cold.
