Venice in 10 hours
We have 10 hours in Venice on our next cruise
so what is the best use of our time? do we DIY or take organised trips?

It depends on what you want to do/see DN. We've DIY'd when we've been there but our days have consisted of mainly wandering around, soaking up the atmosphere and seeing the sights.
If you fancy seeing the Doges Palace then this tour always gets good reviews and can be done independently:

Alternatively if you want to visit Murano, Burano etc then buy a 24 hour vaporetto ticket and go for it!

Nightie man.
10 hours is ample time to see most of the main sights, have a good lunch and a gondola ride, and maybe even visit Murano,Burano or Tortcello.
DIY and please yourself DN. A tour will be maximum 8 hours and may not take in all that you want to see and a lot of what you don't want to see.
Even if you have a balcony cabin , do not be a sleepyhead and watch from its splendour. Instead, toss yoour nightie overboard and proceed to an upper deck for the splendid sail in. Likewise the prom deck for the sail out. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

The main touristico highlights can be seen in a day but you would need a week or more to take in the full beauty that is Venice. DIY for any of the main attractions is not always a good plan due to the size of the queues but you may be looking for a pic rather than wads of historical detail from an official guide.
My advice is to buy a Thomas Cook's Traveller's Guide, on e-bay ideally, read it carefully and then chose a couple of the ten itemised walks contained therein. Cut out the maps, have them blown up to A4 size then laminated ... easy to follow but you can now point at things when you get lost.
On our last visit we walked our choices via the People Mover then returned using a pre purchased ticket on the P&O Shuttle Boat.

If it is your first visit I would say DIY ( you will want to return )
Very easy to see/do all the touristy things .. Doges Palace, St Marks, Rialto Bridge and not forgetting the gondolier ride.
When do you go because I'm sure I've read somewhere that after August 2013 cruise ships will no longer transit the Grand canal .. hope you get the chance to experience it before it stops.

DN, we just had a few hours in Venice when we visited via Catamaran from the Istrian coast of Croatia.
From the terminal (check because many cruises now berth at the main port near the train station?) we had a guided walk to St Mark's Square which took about 20 mins (stopping occasionally to point things out) which crossed over the Grand Canal.
From there we wandered around the square before getting some pictures of the Bridge of Sighs and then heading on a pedestrian route (well signposted) to Rialto Bridge. We also squeezed in a lovely lunch and a visit to a glass-blowing factory as well as a ride in a water-taxi (which was pre-organised on the journey over to Venice).
You'll have plenty of time to see the main sights, and to decide whether you wish to return in the future.

It can depend on where you 'Park'...I was there a couple of years ago and had done all the touristy things on a coach tour...I didn't enjoy Venice (smelly and very, very hot, crowds everywhere and its expensive) so at my last visit I pre purchased a really good street map and decided to walk to St. Mark's Square...It was wonderful....saw loads of things you don't see on an organise tour (didn't what they were though) and stopped at loads of coffee shops for wonderful and resonably priced capuchinos....I didn't make it to St. Mark's square...I enjoyed my second visit to Venice much more than I did my first.
Whatever happens though don't miss the sail in...for many people it is one of their favourites....

We did an organised tour as after going on google to find out how much a gondola ride would be, we decided it was far better value to do the P&O trip which included a gondola ride and Murano factory/island as well as another island, sorry can't remember the name. The sail in was fantastic as wolfie said, don't lay in. Enjoy your day it is lovely
