Evening all, my printer has gone on the blink, the black ink is not working even after trying 2 new cartridges. The HP help desk showed me how to remove the cartridge holder case and clean the contacts and the back of this is all gunged up with ink. So I might try cleaning the tray to see if that cures the problem, if not it looks like a trip to Currys will be needed.

Hmmm, my post has not appeared so apologies if this gets duplicated...

Get an Epson, Towny, HP printers are more trouble than they're worth

This HP printer has been the best I have ever had, very crisp clear prints and excellent photos, not had any problems until now in the 4 years we have had it. However its nearest equivlant HP printer is now £79 and from reading the spec. on line it does not seem to have a paper feed tray, presumably you need to feed in one at a time which seems a major let down.

Ignore the above it does of course have a paper tray but does not feature a paper sensor, whatever that is.
However on further searching HP do offer a similar printer at only £49, probably lower spec than the other but possibly better than my 4 yr old one.

We've had three Epsons over the years. You may think that means they're unreliable. However what happens is this. Epsons only replace the ink reservoir when you change the cartridge, where HP and others change the whole print head. Because of that Epson say you should only use their ink. I ignore that and use cheaper copycat cartridges. The ink quality is excellent for printing but less so for clogging, and after a few years clogs up the heads. Then I throw the lot away and start again. Because branded inks are ludicrously expensive what I save on ink pays for replacing the printer occasionally several times over. And overall also cheaper than buying say an HP printer

Obviously some sort of weird logic in Merv's brain :ugeek: going on here - I have had Hp printer for years - always buy the hp cartridges and have had no problems! (Watch it breakdown now)

My weird logic is that buying the cheaper cartridges and replacing the printer every now and again still costs me less than buying one HP printer and their ink, which costs more than liquid gold. I am financially better off. What's weird about that?

Don't talk to me about bl** dy printers. Our Epson is playing up, it keeps saying 'off line' when trying to print from the iPad.

Reinstalling the software made no difference

In your mind you are but if you did a scientific test - the difference is probably minimal.

Moving on - I am the Leader (along with my hp printer!). :relaxed:

I never buy the branded ink, way too expensive. Good old Amazon always comes to the rescue for a fraction of the price. Never had any problems with them.

I have always used printer based cartridges ever since I checked the usage per cartridge on my last 'Brother' printer and discovered that I got less than half the number of pages using cheapo ink, and the print quality improved considerably with proper inks.

Reinstalled software again, this time leaving the 'search for new software' un-checked, and all is now fine. I've noticed this before, as soon as I install the latest drivers it all goes pear shape.

As for the argument for buying either brand or non brand ink, I can see if you print allot and are requiring spot on graphics then yes the branded ink maybe a better bet, but for what I require which is just running off the odd text with graphics it is perfectly adequate.
