Just offended Merv by posting an on-topic reply to Annie on the off-topic thread. I guess you will have seen it by now but, at least for now, he seems to be doing OK, thanks. Fuelled by drugs, though !

More to the point, how's your plumbing ?

Careful - if you stay on the mains too long, the water board will start charging you ! You'll be connected to the national grid next !!

TV up and running, and so far pleased it. Still deciding if a sound bar is needed.

I thought the whole point of a new telly was to avoid the need for a sound bar - or did you just want a new toy. Have you considered hearing aids ?

Have you listened to the latest tv's lately. They all sound a bit tinny due to them having such tiny speakers because they are all very thin screens. Yes, if you start paying mega bucks then I would expect the sound to be good, but for the average tv the sound isn't going to be brilliant. Yes this new TV's is pretty good, but I think it needs a bit more base which a sound bar will give. We shall see.

That was the beauty of my old Panasonic TV, you had base and treble settings on it. Now it's all music, movie, speech etc settings that have no adjustment. You only have to go into somewhere like Currys and every tv will be hooked up to a sound bar.

Stephen,
We tried a panasonic sound bar, had it for about 2 weeks but could not get it to provide a satisfactory sound and clearer speech, so we sent it back and now just use the TV which is a Panasonic LED and very thin.
We find that some programmes are as clear as a bell whilst others are not, and some actors diction is very clear whilst others mumble, its amazing we can follow the stories when we only clearly hear about 60-70% of the dialogue.

I think you've hit it on the nut there FK. Mrs C keeps banging on to me about getting a sound bar because she can't hear half the dialogue but I agree that mumbling actors is most of the problem. And she forgets to put her hearing aids in half the time !!

It's not just the actors mumbling - the sound engineers seem incapable of getting the balance between speech and "background" music right. As these programmes are supposed to mimic real life (hah!), why is there music anyway?

You mean to tell me you have never been lying beside Mrs Shiney, feeling all romantic, and not heard the rising crescendo of strings building all around you....?!

No problem hearing speech/sound. I would just like it to have a bit more depth/base.

Anyway, no harm in trying a sound bar, and as towny said, if it don't work satisfactory it goes back.
