I think it's going to take a bit more than a bucket and sponge Merv

We watched a US hospital medical drama last night, one of the story lines concerned a doctor whose medical insurance had increased to $35000pa following a malpractice incident.
I wonder if the UK health service would be safer if doctors here had to pay for their own insurance?

The do. The Medical Defence Union is the largest - but not the only - company providing this service.

Thanks for that info Notso, do you know if any UK practising medics have to pay $35000pa for their cover?

To be honest, I have no idea what the annual fee range is, but somehow I doubt it. The courts over here are nowhere near as generous (?outlandish?) in the amounts they award - so insurers here are unlikely to have to pay out as much, and fees could therefore be lower.
