I contacted quite a few people yesterday and I can see that 6 of them have joined already.

It is all well and good P&O relying on Facebook and Twitter but IMO it is a big mistake, people can put anything on there good or bad and it is not so easy to get rid of.

I think they are shooting themselves in the foot and they have lost a wealth of good information and advice which was very helpful to their passengers.

Lets hope most of them find their way here.

Sorry, Romig1 and Vigi, I have no contact details for emjay. I believe that she lives somewhere near me but I have never met her, I only knew her through the forum. As you probably know, she is two weeks into a world cruise so the P&O forum may well be back before she is!

Hi, I can understand some of the comments about Facebook, but it does have its good side. A while ago someone started a page called BCAL (British Caledonian Airways) reunited. We now have 298 members and I have met up again with friends I haven't seen in years. Facebook is good for that and if you have your privacy settings right, there is no problem.

Not sure I like it for companies like P&O though.

Personally i don't think the P&O one will come back and if this is anything to go by, then I don't think anyone will miss it. This is far better and if we are all over here, who wants to go back?

I am most impressed... and when I clicked on P & O it went straight to the website and unlike the P & O site when I forgot to go back to previous page and closed the page down (ie going out of the internet) when I logged back on and into this site it hadnt logged me out which the P & O site would have done. Must remember to log off though... :-)

Hi Jack. :-)

Romig, I thought that too about inviting Matt from Admin. But then I thought if he sees us having an effective forum of our own it might mean they put a new P&O forum on the back burner or be shelved completely ?

What worries me is that someone thought that the answer to the problem was to reduce the number of entries in the forum database which is why when the forum returned on Tuesday it had been decimated. Anyone with half a brain would know that that was not the answer to the problem but more seriously it shows a total lack of understanding of what the forum/community was all about, and is why I reserve judgement on whether it will come back.

How long does it take to set up a forum? This one was up within 24 hours. I do, however, accept that on a commercial site it will take longer but if there is any real intention then something should be happening by the end of next week in my opinion.
You are right in my area of expertise here .. data. Without knowing how they have set their systems up it isd impossible to make any sensible or meaningful comments but with the way modern systems are tiered using multiple abstraction layers and dynamic database design then purging data can improve performance (anybody who has worked with the likes of SharePoint will know that). In this case I am guessing they did try the other obvious options and someone thought that giving the database less work to do might have helped ... obviously it didn't.

How long does it take to set up a forum? It took me less than 10 minutes, but, as you say, there is a whole world of difference between setting up a hosted forum versus setting up an on-prem forum. It also depends very much on the underlying infrastructure and that appears to be where the problem lies with P&O's site (only a guess) , that can be very difficult to change. To me they should have just broken the link between the main site and the forum, and ignore the moaning minnies that complained they had to log in twice ... I assume running them within the same domain would still have allowed free on-board access.

Hi Ken, perhaps they really didn't want to run it any more. Could be as simple as that?

This forum seems to tick all the boxes and P&O could do far worse than use this as a template for their own site. From what I have seen so far it does everything we have always asked for. The Smurf has done an excellent job and I hope P&O are taking notice even if it means running the P&O forum as a separate entity with links to their own website. Or just take this one over with suitable recompense to Smurfy of course!!!

I put a message on CC saying there was a link on the P&O page and my message hasn't been removed yet. I did say good things about CC too - their threads about excursions, different places etc. so maybe they'll leave my message on! Some called Soobs has posted saying they have had a look at this forum but there's nothing much on it! Should have gone to SpecSavers!

I know I've already said as much but it's such a relief to have a forum back - not any old forum you understand but this magnificent creation! Hope that's not laying it on too thick but that's how it feels. With the P&O Community forum gone, after I checked my emails in the morning I would have a look at CCritic and at Crowsnest and that was it, all done and dusted in less that 15 mins. Sometimes in the evening I would look at Cruisedot but I would get so cross at some of the silly reviews on there about spoiled cruises all because they didn't have a towel animal on their bed!

By the way, I do like the background colour, it makes the typing so much easier to see than a white background.

Thanks again David.

Carole :D
