Oceana - change of dress code
I noticed in the new brocure that Oceana is reverting to 2 dress codes for 2014, dropping the smart-jacket required code which was introduced for this summer.
On another forum someone has reported that they have recieved an email from P&O stating their April cruise this year will be 2 codes with no smart-jacket required.
So i checked the P&O site and they have reverted to 2 codes for this summer as well, my cruise is now listed as 4 black tie and 10 evening casual
Confusing eh!

Also good news for people who do not like dressing up for a Spag Bol, no problem wearing one in the Select dining venues though ... as far as I am concerned anyhow.bassman67 wrote:Good news for who? People who don't own jackets?

Re: Oceana - change of dress code
The AOTH clan have never cruised on Oceana and are unlikely to do so with the new two tier dress code. We like to dress up on a few nights, especially on sea days, and think that the three tier dress code is ok.#
At the risk of sounding like Derek Kane, I think sailing out of a beautiful port like Venice, sipping a cocktail, waiting to be called to dinner is the sort of occaision that deserves a smart outfit.

When we go out nowadays, we often see younger men wearing shirts that are not "tucked in" and that passes for "smart casual" it seems. That style is OK for guys with inside leg measurements that are larger than waist, but everyone else should wear a jacket. That includes me, by the way!Quizzical Bob wrote:Good news for people who detest wearing jackets when on holiday.bassman67 wrote:Good news for who? People who don't own jackets?

Many modern shirts are designed to be worn outside the trousers. It's the fashion!bassman67 wrote:When we go out nowadays, we often see younger men wearing shirts that are not "tucked in" and that passes for "smart casual" it seems. A fashion that I have been following for several years and will continue so to do... in spite of the moth ball brigadeQuizzical Bob wrote:Many modern shirts are designed to be worn outside the trousers. Can I quote the MM here and say that there can be a marked difference between fashion and style!

Indeed you may but not everybody would wish to look like Rupert Bear nor a bystander in a TV Period Drama.
At the end of the day we all wear what we feel comfortable in, providing it conforms to ' P&O's ' Dress Code of course ... rather than the one on TMM's wish list.

I used to spend hours criticising Derek Kane and disagreeing with his ridiculous opinions which were seldom backed up with actual facts.....but I can't disagree with the above.bassman67 wrote:Can I quote the MM here and say that there can be a marked difference between fashion and style!
On my cruise on Aurora in the summer I shall enjoy wearing my dinner suit on four nights (and am toying with the idea in this my 50th year of purchasing a white DJ), on four nights I will look forward to wearing a smart suit or the blazer that Santa bought me a Christmas (some nights with a tie, some without), and on the rest I will be wearing various outfits, which will include denim jeans and the odd untucked shirt, but all I hope will lean towards the stylish.
Compared to most of my fellow cruisers I am a fairly young man. I cruise as part of family group which includes fashion conscious teenagers. We don't think that the the three tier dress code is out dated or fuddy duddy....we think it's just about right and don't see any reason to tinker with it.
One day P&O will cruise out of the north.....

Re: Oceana - change of dress code
P&O appear to be spinning like a weather vane in a gale on this one, but I suppose that all's well that ends well.
One thought, however. Could it possibly be that someone made a mistake when posting the dress codes for this Summer's cruises on Oceana on the P&O site, and no one noticed it at the time. Once it was on the website it became a point of reference for P&O employees and was accepted as fact. Only now, with the publication of the new brochure, has someone realised that an error had occured and corrected it. Stranger things have happened at sea!

I quite the 3 tier dress code system as well. Don't forget though that just because an evening's dress code is casual, that doesn't mean that you can't wear a jacket and/or tie if you choose to do so - or even a lounge suit if it takes your fancy.

I seem to remember the same thing happened a couple of years ago. The dress codes were switched for the summer season after bookings had been taken for several months.Denarius wrote:P&O appear to be spinning like a weather vane in a gale on this one, but I suppose that all's well that ends well.

I suspect that P&O have just changed their corporate mind...again.

I suppose that dress codes are a bit like speed limits in reverse - they specify the minimum standard required and there is nothing to stop anyone aspiring to more than the minimum.

Correct!bassman67 wrote:I suppose that dress codes are a bit like speed limits in reverse - they specify the minimum standard required and there is nothing to stop anyone aspiring to more than the minimum.
The fashion police that every cruise line forum has would look at it the other way of course.
I noticed the furore caused by Cunard changing their dress ciode to just have formals and informals with no tie required for the informals. You would have thought the sky had fallen in because wearing a tie will be optional.
Back to Oceana - when I booked this July's cruise last summer the dress code was 3 codes in winter and 2 in summer, just as the year before. Then P&O changed the summer code to 3, now they have reverted back to 2!
I know why, passenger confusion. Passengers booked expecting 2 codes and would get 3. This would cause confusion and anger as significant numbers of passengers arrived aboard without a casual jacket. So they went back to 2 codes, after all, there is nothing stopping you wearing a jacket on evening casual nights.

Re: Oceana - change of dress code
So this is where some of you are to be found following the demise of the P&O website community. Only just found this site today so quite excited having felt bereft without my daily fix on the forum. We've recently booked on Oceana to the fjords at the end of May and were very confused about the dress code. I emailed P&O with a question and was just directed to the website with the list of dress codes for each cruise. Then lo and behold a few days later a new booking confirmation with just 2 dress codes and the website and cruise personaliser had been changed too. Let's hope that's it now. Just over 9 weeks to go and counting!
