One glimmer of hope is
Downing Street says the new regulations contain a “very clear provision” that means they will automatically expire at 00:01 GMT on Wednesday 2 December.
So much for doom and gloom Gove
They could easily legislate for a new lockdown to follow on straight away.

Indeed, if deaths are as high as predicted at the start of December, that's probably what they'll do. They can hardly tell us all to go off and enjoy Christmas with a back drop of a 1000 deaths a day.

I can think of a couple of occasions at least when they have been in negotiation with the government and have stolen a march by announcing their own initiatives first which resembled those of the government but were just slightly tweaked.
Whatever Boris government did it is clear that Scotland and Wales would do something different so it is not exactly true they did not have action from the government. As devolved nations they had every right to decide for themselves what to do.
I am always bemused by our media who seem to think whatever Wales and Scotland do that must be the right track to follow. Actually whatever ANY country does, in their eyes it seems to be infinitely better than anything we do.
You’re right there OBF.
I could put dozens of links to foreign periodicals showing that their citizens are far more furious with their leaders.
Violent protests all over the continent are ignored by the British press.
Isn't it the anti lockdown brigade that have been protesting?

That's been happening here too.

But they are rioting about being put under lockdown or more stringent measures? That’s what I was getting at.

They aren’t rioting because they think the government has dithered and delayed about the implementation of firmer measures

Wrong Gill. Last week on LBC, the Paris correspondent was talking about how many French people were angry about the way their government has handled the pandemic and the same in many other countries.

Yes, they don’t like the lockdown restrictions- that seems to be what’s fuelling it.

I have searched, and can’t see anything to indicate the riots are about leaving the lockdown too late or not locking down hard enough.

That's not what was said in HOC this afternoon. On the 2nd December we will return to the tier system and areas will be in the tier appropriate to the conditions at that time. I do however accept that things may change.

Anyway I prefer to have a glass half full approach.

The Guardian reports today that mass testing is to begin in Liverpool.
It also said that up to now, it’s estimated that only 25% of those who had been contacted through track and trace had actually done the right thing and self isolated.
That explains quite a lot.

One issue with self isolation when contacted by Track and Trace is that it is instant and there is no time to prepare and nobody, as far as I am aware, has said how you get food under these circumstances.

Hi David.....should anyone become infected they will need to self isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms or the date of having a positive test if they are asymptomatic, any "in house" family members will need to self isolate for 14 days.

Keeping socially distanced, any other family member, or friend can drop off food as can online delivery suppliers.....failing theses options you can contact your local council or onelife food stores...There will of course be a massive mark up if anyone chooses to use my generous offer.. ...chocolates come free of charge...

Of course there are some people who live hand to mouth, day to day. But if we were advised/ordered to self isolate for 14 days immediately with no notice we wouldn't starve. The meals might get a bit weird by day 14 but we wouldn't starve.

Sounds good in theory but family are either in New Zealand or America so that is a no, no. There is no chance of getting online delivery at such short notice and friends are miles away.

We don't live hand to mouth and have a very well stocked store cupboard but we don't have much in the way of meat, fish and veg in stock. We could last for a week.

And if you think for one minute I would want to live off OL's chocs - then starvation starts to look appealing (actually, thinking about it, they are one and the same!!)

This is not a political comment or opinion on what has or has not happened so far. We are where we are. It is an idea for what maybe could or should happen next.

When we get to the end of this "lockdown" word is we will return to the system of regional/local tiers. I'm happy with that in principal. I don't see why business in, say, Cornwall, if infection rates are low, should be impacted because rates are higher in, say, Liverpool.

But I think we need a Tier 4, which is in effect what we have nationally now. And the default should not be Tier 1, but should be Tier 4. Moving to a lower Tier should be earned based on low infection rates. In effect a reward for good behaviour. When lockdown ends all areas should be placed in Tier 4 unless and until their local figures clearly indicate otherwise is safe and appropriate.

Obviously your recent operation has affected your brain as that is far too logical

I would not disagree with the fourth tier but I would be more inclined to put everyone in tier three so that businesses can reopen
