Re: Current Affairs
Not necessarily true, if Cummings is to be believed, Johnson surrounds himself with them.

Re: Current Affairs
The first thing I thought of when I heard about this marriage ( apart from thinking it was another dead cat to get awkward news off the Sunday front pages) was how does a twice divorced man get married in a Catholic Church. Apparently the answer is that his previous marriages were in the Anglican Church, so were not recognised by the Catholic Church. In the eyes of the Catholic Church Johnson has never been married, and was therefore free to marry in the Catholic Church.
I suppose this means that the Catholic Church regards all his children from his marriages as illegitimate. How nice for them.

As I have said before, we can quite easily cut you free to join the republic if you no longer wish to be part of the UK, and that's one referendum that Boris might sanction.Kendhni wrote: 30 May 2021, 10:01Onelife wrote: 30 May 2021, 09:22Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Dopey + 23 others so I’m led to believeKendhni wrote: 30 May 2021, 08:24
More likely that, not for the first time, he needed to do something to get Cummings out of the headlines.
I wonder how many were actually at the ceremony?![]()

Re: Current Affairs
Now obviously I'm thick but can anyone explain why it is unacceptable in the 21st century for a white actor to play Othello but okay for a black actress to play Anne Boleyn?
I'm guessing the same reason people go down on one knee to remember George Floyd, a known black criminal murdered by a white cop (in another country) but not to remember Lee Rigby, a white soldier doing his duty, murdered by two black men (in this country).

Re: Current Affairs
And why is it acceptable to have Music of Black Origin, the Black Police Officer's Association, and Gospel Singer of the Year where all the participants are black and the judges are all black. Is this what is meant by diversity?

I did hear his opinion piece and thought it very funny ... Hislop at his best ... he has also given similar tear downs of Johnson, Trump, Farage, UKIP, Corbyn, Cameron, Blair, Brown, Campbell, Brexit and brexiteers. He is an ecumenical ranter.david63 wrote: 30 May 2021, 15:07Did you by any chance hear Ian Hislop on HIGNFY on Friday? If not https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09jxwqv
As I said several weeks back ""Cummings v Johnson, two of the most mendacious, integrity devoid people of our time having a public bitch-slap - this could be hilarious." ... I don't think I have laughed so much at British politics, with Carrie now in charge it will ensure Johnson will toe her line.

Can't help, I don't concern myself with such things, I just see an actor playing a role.Mervyn and Trish wrote: 30 May 2021, 17:41Now obviously I'm thick but can anyone explain why it is unacceptable in the 21st century for a white actor to play Othello but okay for a black actress to play Anne Boleyn?

Re: Current Affairs
With regard to skin colour casting I think we have to stand back and see things through the eyes of theatre director/s who by their very nature are always trying to reinvent old theatrical productions into something that gives audiences a new experience, a bit like panto performances. Theatrical licence keeps old classics current, that being said, I wouldn’t be very happy if they tried to change “Snow white” into Snow white and the six dwarfs…Oh no I wouldn’t
P.s I see where you are coming from Sir Merv but I hope theatre keeps well away from theses issues.

Re: Current Affairs
I just read an article about the new Cruella film from Disney - Emma Stone isn't allowed to carry Cruellas trademark cigarette holder. I thought her comment on the matter was hilarious "I don’t want to promote smoking, but I’m also not trying to promote skinning puppies.".
Things change and as Onelife points out art directors are paid to provide new experiences and slants on old stories.

You cannot change history. What next, The Life and Times of Winston Churchill starring Idris Elba or Timothy Spall starring as Muhammed Ali?

Make that four. Mrs S and I looked in amazement when they were advertising the Anne Boleyn program the other night. What next, the Christmas nativity with a Chinese Jesus.

I suspect you are playing devil's advocate Ken and actually fully understand my point. I'm sure you fully appreciate that a director providing a new slant or experience by casting a white Othello will be hounded to hell and back.Kendhni wrote: 31 May 2021, 06:55Things change and as Onelife points out art directors are paid to provide new experiences and slants on old stories.
