My view of ............ Malaga

Unread post by The Invigilator »

Well, what a very pleasant surprise Malaga was. To be honest the image we all had in mind of this town is the club 18-30 style - did we want to get off and mooch? Well we were here might as well see it and cross it off the list. We were so glad we did, after a short shuttle bus ride into Malaga we got off and decided to head towards the Gibralfaro Castle. To get there we first walked through some beautiful gardens with mosaic seating, fountains, statues, orange trees and palm trees. A lovely cool place to stroll through near to the sea. A word of warning the walk to the castle is steep but absolutely, definitely worth the effort, you will see some stunning views out to sea and across Malaga including a great view of the bullring. When you reach the top there is a small kiosk selling ice creams, water snacks etc next to the entrance to the castle. A warning in our experience to gain entrance to a lot of places cash is required as they have machines to purchase your tickets which don't accept cards. The best value we found was to purchase a joint ticket for the castle and Alcazaba (the Arab Castle) it cost I think 8e per adult and 3e per child. The castle is amazing, you can walk along the walls and again will get some amazing views, there was a small museum and a little cafe too. We then retraced our steps down the hill to visit Alcazaba if you enjoy looking around historical places these two are definitely for you another amazing castle, remarkably intact and loads to see. As you leave the castle turn immediately right and walk along the side of the entrance building and you will get a great view of the Roman theatre, the ticket dosn't give you access to it but you can see plenty of it from inside and just outside the castle. Coming back down the steps turn right walk straight ahead past a number of restaurants on your left, keep going to the traffic lights and turn left you are now in the square where Picasso's birth place is. A pretty square. From here we then walked back to where the shuttle bus was due to pick us up. There seemed to be a problem with the shuttle bus in Malaga but we were told that if we wanted to we could walk back to the ship which we opted to do. Quite a pleasant walk past a number of small shops and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed Malaga it was clean, felt safe mooching around in, beautiful gardens and amazing historical sites, very easy to DIY.

"Vigi's Guide To Europe" is making interesting reading - you should publish !

I agree, Malaga is a revelation. We didn't bother with the shuttle at all as it is such an easy walk. Only tricky bit was crossing the main road outside the port area. Rather high kerbs and traffic not for the faint-hearted !!

Yes another interesting review. I had only been to Malaga airport until our cruise last year and like you I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and interesting it was. We did a P&O excursion and I'm beginning to think that people see a lot more if they DIY especially in Ports such as this one.
