Squirrelling away £40k pa includes risk as half of that would be in shares.Six years ago you could have bought 400 CCL shares for your £20k.

Like cash
Dislike risk
We both sold successful businesses so totally unlikely to risk anything.

Re: PO changes
Neither business was much of a risk OL because we both knew what we were doing.
Mrs B had ladies fashion shops but had worked in the business most of her working life.
Never borrow. Never over commit. Never over stock.
Good location.
Get out at the right time.
Pretty simple really.

Our savings are mostly in Premium Bonds these days.
Less risky and better returns than Keffie's investments.

Re: PO changes
The best investment we ever made was cashing in our property shares just after Black Wednesday… just under two weeks later share withdrawals were frozen and we would have lost several thousands of pounds.
It was after this we mostly invested in Premium Bonds.
Whilst my investments on the gee gee’s will have shown a loss over the years, I doubt it would amount to anywhere near the cost of Sir Merv’s golf membership
