Why this obsession with Panettone
Why are supermarket shelves filled with variations of Panettone over Christmas, what with that and lots of German stollen now taking over from traditonal British mince pies and Christmas cake, it really p****s me off.

Simple solution towny, don't buy them
If you happen to be near, pop in, Mrs B has made a mountain of mince pies.

It always looks dry to me much like Madeira cake we used to get at church Christmas parties when I was a child.
I was taught to be cautious

I would love to try Mrs B mince pies…but please don’t use the same delivery service I use for my Chocolates…I’ve had a few undelivered presents in the pastRay B wrote: 17 Dec 2025, 22:28Simple solution towny, don't buy them

From what I’ve been told Mrs B uses the same packaging as Aldi mince pies

It seems like Panettone and stollen are taking over, likely because they’re popular in Europe. It’s a shame that they’re pushing out classic British treats, but I guess everyone has their own holiday favorites!

Re: Why this obsession with Panettone
There are some very tasty Panettones and there are some dried up, bereft of fruit and not tasty at all. My daughter had one this Christmas which was stuffed full of fruit and peel and very tasty. In the past I've used Panettone in various recipes. One of my favourites is Nigella Lawson's Panettone Pudding. This is like a bread and butter pudding but a very luxurious one with cream and vanilla. Very easy and fast to make. I would even consider buying a Panettone just to make this pudding. No good for dieting though, if that happens to be a New Year Resolution!
