Roma Pass for limited time in Rome

Post by Louis100 »

Hi everyone,

I’m planning an upcoming cruise with a stop at Civitavecchia and I’m looking into options for spending the day in Rome. As time in port is limited, I’m trying to keep things simple and efficient once in the city. I’ve come across the Roma Pass and was wondering if any of you have used it during a cruise stop. Does it actually save time for transport and attractions, or is it better to plan everything separately for a short visit?

I’d really appreciate any feedback, especially from those who’ve done Rome as a shore excursion and had to manage queues and travel time carefully.

Thanks in advance

Having been to Rome several times from Civitavecchia it is not something that I would want to do on my own from a cruise.

The first problem you have is getting into Rome from Civitavecchia - the journey by road on a good day, of which there are not many, is around an hour each way. The other option is by train and that is about a 20 minute walk from the dock gates - once you have managed to get to them which can take some time depending on how many ships are in port that day (last time I was in Civitavecchia there were seven ships in that day with most doing turnaround)

Once in Rome you then have the problem of actually getting around and not all the attractions are conveniently located so you will not be able to do everything in a day. Also if you are going independently you will have some large queues to contend with.

Personally for a first visit to Rome I would choose one of the cruise line's excursions where you are guaranteed to get back to the ship and will normally be "fast tracked" into the attractions.

Never visited Rome myself, but I’ve heard that the trains/drivers can go on strike at the drop of a hat so if that is you main means of transport then that could cause you not getting back in time before the ship leaves.

We did the ship tour in Rome.
It was a very long day but certainly worth it in our opinion.
Queue jumped everything we wanted to see including the Sistine Chapel.
It was expensive but good value.

When we were docked in Civitavecchia we decided just to do a coach excursion of the main sites in Rome which meant we didn't get to go into any attractions. I can agree with the time problem. It certainly seemed a long drive to actually get into Rome. We stopped on the way ostensibly for a coffee and toilet break but in the event there were so many coaches stopped there we just had time to go to the loo. Once in Rome we certainly did get to see all the major sites, and as we just had the one day in the city it was ideal. However, while we were just past the Vatican, we could see the balcony from where the Pope give his blessing, a motorist tried to overtake our coach and ended up crashing into the side of the coach. The coach wasn't damaged but the car didn't look too good. The driver appeared at the driver's door and was waving her arms, shouting and, we learnt later, demanding she be given cash from the driver to repair her car. The police appeared, I think there are two layers of the Police in Rome, the State Police and the Local Carabinieri, well we had both on board the coach. You can imagine the noise from all these shouting Italians. We were there for about an hour and it became obvious we were going to be late back to the ship. From memory I think we were due back about 4pm. So we started back and it became obvious that it was going to be necessary to have a toilet stop, there wasn't a toilet on the coach. So we did eventually stop at a garage that had toilet facilities, unfortunately only one toilet so it took some time. We did get back to the ship, again from memory we were about at least 90 minutes late back. I know this sort of thing won't happen to everyone but the traffic, this tour was over Friday lunchtime, was horrendous. I wouldn't even consider doing a tour of Rome independently from the ship. We did feel that we saw the majority of the sites even though we didn't get to go round any of them. That would be for another visit, not on a cruise.

I'd agree, Rome as a DIY trip is too risky. Neither the roads nor the railway is reliable above to chance getting left behind when the ship sails. Do a cruise line trip. It might look expensive but not as expensive, or stressful, as making your own way to the next port.

there is a 'Rome on your own' trip (or used to be....) which is a glorified shuttle bus.

If you did that, then you could plan what you want to do while there without the stress of transport worries.

Otherwise some trips offer a 'site' in the first half and free time for the other half

Be aware however the 'Rome on Your Own' drop off may be remote from many sights. In earlier years they used to drop off in locations we found very convenient but on our most recent visit (June 2025) the drop off was near the Circus Maximus and, whilst not far from the Colliseum, literally miles from anywhere else - we had timed tickets for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel with well over an hour to get there and after walking for over a mile were fortunate to find a Taxi to get us there in time.

My own recommendation would be to do one of the Tours listed as visiting noteable sights but if you do chose Rome on Your own I would advise you equip yourself with a map, and whilst on board check where the drop off will be, and as noted already, be aware of lengthy queues and whilst pre booking timed slots considerably reduces the queue length you still need to be able to get there in good time.

And just to add to my recent post, the reason we booked independently for the Sistine Chapel was the ship did not offer that with any of the tours.
