Man Overboard Prank

Unread post by Ray B »

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas while returning to Ford Lauderdale declared a man overboard emergency. Turning the ship around to search the sea and calling out the US Coastguard, after a while the emergency was called off after it was discovered a group of teenagers had raised the alarm as a prank.
Maybe it not just the President with a mental problem, some American cruise passengers suffer the same problem .
A man overboard report will aways have an immediate response by cruise lines and it should never be reported as a prank.
They obviously know who the culprits are and should take strong action to deter anyone else thinking that's a good prank to play.
Don't worry, be happy

Spot on Ray. At the very least they should be sued for the cost and blacklisted by every cruise company in the world.

I’ve got a good sense of humour but find nothing funny in this stupidity…make the idiots pay for costs incurred, if they can’t pay, make the parents pay.

Actions have consequences.

I would call it more of a criminal action than a prank. Have the police waiting at the next port, off load them and any parents and prosecute.

US Coastguard - https://www.dco.uscg.mil/Our-Organizati ... s-NO-JOKE/
Are there penalties for issuing a false distress call? Check it out:

6 years in prison
$250,000 criminal fine
$5,000 civil fine
Reimbursing the U.S. Coast Guard for the cost of performing the search
That should make them, and their parents, think twice

Would love to know the outcome, but it may be hard to find.

Unlike the UK, most American states have no restrictions on naming and shaming children…if you’re old enough to do the crime then you’re old enough to be named for it....whether that is right, I'm a little unsure.

In Germany the parents are responsible for their children's behaviour and can be fined for what they do. Seems what is needed here. All too often parents are very quick to defend their children's bad behaviour rather than take responsibility for it.
