Malaga

Unread post by The Invigilator »

We are trying to decide wether to DIY this port or to go on P&0s best of Malaga highlights tour I think we have about 5 hours in Malaga is this a port where you get a shuttle bus or walk straight off it and into the town. We were thinking of visiting Picasso's house, the Arabian castle and the Roman Amphitheatre are these all achievable DIY or would it be better to use P&O? It's a toss up to book this tour or the Valencia town tour with a trip to the San Jose Caves - it's so exciting so much choice. - getting excited    any advice?

I've not visited there on a cruise, but Malaga is a lovely city and easily DIYable I would guess. The old castle is on the hillside, fairly close to the harbour I think (no idea where the ship docks though) - there was a lovely market near the dock when we went and you can see the castle thing behind it. Part of it is a Parador hotel I believe. The cathedral is also lovely and there are some great shops.

Brilliant thankyou Lulucat :D we can't wait. On this cruise we have so far only booked a trip in Gibraltar because we have such a short amount of time there. We are going to Barcelona, Lisbon, Cadiz and Valencia too and think that apart from Valencia will DIY the rest.

We were in Cadiz in December and it was great. We docked right across the road from a main square - we were on Adonia though and I don't know where a bigger ship would go - hopefully the same place. There is a bar on the left of the square as you look towards the building at the end - it is almost opposite an 'american' type bar. We had a beer there and they gave us a lovely little pot of paella with it - yum yum. There is also an amazing indoor food market - well worth a look round.

Great thankyou - did you do any of the waymarked walks around the town? We have got most of the day in Cadiz so thought mooching around the town following the walks would be an ideal thing to do. Will look out for the bar - have a drink and do a bit of people watching too :D thanks Lulu

Malaga is a lovely port. After a short shuttle bus ride you can stroll up the hill towards the castle at the top. We didn't go inside the castle but you do get lovely views over the sea and the town with some very elegant buildings (part of the university if I remember correctly). You can visit the bullring where there is a museum or just take a stroll down a wonderful avenue of trees interspersed with little fountains and statues. There is a beach area too although we're not really into the beach scene. It's a beautiful town for relaxing and chilling out.
Didn't get as far as the shops so no idea about shopping!!!
I was taught to be cautious

Vigi,

Even with a half day in Gib you will be able to see the main sights via a taxi, the distances are very compact.
