The reason there isn't a kettle on US Cruise Liines and / or Hotels has nothing to do with safety but everything to do with tipping ...

In this instance for a ' service ' to provide you with a cup of coffee that is undrinkable as compared to the one you could have made yourself in your own cabin.

We always take a small thermo kettle with two small inbult cups plus suitable ingredients ... wherever we go.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

When on a cruise, we have no idea when we will wake up in the morning so, placing the card outside the cabin the previous night is a no no for tea/coffee first thing.

However, we do place a room service request for juice and cereal for breakfast every day, and, at the same time every day, and of course that awaits us whatever time we rise, only needing to open the door. Years ago all that was needed was a loud, 'come in', (shame that has vanished), now one of us has to actually get up and open the door, such a pain!!! On disembarkation day it's the MDR.

We have only been on one cruise with Cunard and we pre-ordered early morning drinks from Room Service. We asked for I tea and I hot chocolate. We asked that it be delivered between 7 and 7.15am. They arrived at 6.45am - the tea had no milk accompanying it and the hot chocolate was stone cold! We didn't bother again and if we go on Cunard again I would certainly take a kettle and ask for it to be tested. We really missed being able to make a drink when we wanted it.

One-time Cunarders here too - though we have something booked for December 2014. I will take a kettle then. The cabins are so nice it;'s a shame not to be able to enjoy them with the first cuppa of the day (as we do, every day, at home)
We too tried room service and although it was quick it wasn't great. RS quick brekkie, when you have an early trip, is a different matter and for whatever reason seems a much better idea.

Am I the only person on the planet that does not have to have a cup of tea the minute that they wake up?

We don't have a hot drink 'the minute we wake up', but I do like to have a hot drink before getting dressed and going up for breakfast.

No you're not David. I like a nice vodka and coke first thing.

I don't like a "nice cup of tea" at any time - can't stand the stuff!

No you're not the only one.

When I'm at home, my early morning liquid intake is an orange juice and an Actimel at breakfast. My first hot drink is usually a coffee mid morning.

When I'm on holiday, I'll have coffee with my breakfast, and occasionally a coffee before we go to breakfast. But it's not an essential and I must admit I don't really understand why the early morning tea is so vital to people's wellbeing.

I like a coffee when I first wake up, but on holiday I like to sleep in for as long as possible. Because we prefer a 'civilised' breakfast in the main dining room, I find that there isn't time to have a drink in bed if we're going to get to the dining room for 9am; so we actually used the tea and coffee making facilities less than we thought we would.

I guess a lot depends on what time you wake? Sadly, we continue to wake at just after 6, despite not having to get up for work (and despite being on holiday, sometimes)

Thank you for the information that a thermostatically controlled kettle is allowed on Cunard. Now, where can you buy a metal travel one? :?: Room service on Cunard has never been a problem. It serves us as a wake up call. Occasionally hot chocolate can be slightly cooler than desired, but not a problem.

Eureka: john Lewis sell them. :D

Don't make tea in the bedroom at home and don't on holiday either.

In the tight confines of a P&O cabin I would prefer to see the tea making accoutrements and supplies swept away.

Tea can be had via cabin service, at any restaurant (incl. self service) or (at a price) at a bar.

Room service is provided on Cunard at any time day or night. You do not need a kettle.

The water provided by room service is never boiling and you need boiling water to make a good cup of tea. Maybe now they make a proper teapot, WITH boiling water, but we have had so many mediocre efforts via room service that we have not asked for tea for many years. In fact, I don't even like the tea bags that P&O now use and, as on our last few cruises, will be taking my own on our next.

Maybe, because I am on holiday I like to have a cuppa on my balcony, before getting dressed, and before I face the day, and don't want to decide the night before at what time that will be. It can vary by half an hour and I like my tea when I want it, whether it be first thing in the morning, or when returning from ashore, and not having to wait for room service OR having to trudge off to the buffet.

Well said Wolfie. We too like to wake up when we wake up, not at a time we decide the night before, and have a cup of fresh brewed tea then, not a luke warm offering 20 minutes later. For those who prefer room service they can ignore the kettle, but having one there gives all passengers a choice.

I remember a few years back when we cruised with Mum-in-law and, although we were on P&O with facilities available, her eyesight was not good enough to be making tea first thing. So we ordered her room service, to be woken with a cup of tea at 8am.

After a few days we discovered that she had been getting up early in order to be washed and dressed by the time the steward appeared. He in turn was upset that he was not arriving early enough to deliver the tea as a wake up call as requested. So each day he came a little earlier. And the next she got up a little earlier. And so on. By the time we found out, the tea was coming nearer 6 than 8! So we cancelled the order and starting taking one round from our cabin.

Long live the self service kettle and if we go on Cunard again we will take our own.
