Re: Maderia
Hi, we were advised of dangers of Dengue Fever for our New Year cruise which took in Madeira on NYE. We just took precaution by buying Boots own mosquito wipes (individual packets) that you can use before going ashore then keep one or two in bag or pocket in case wish to top up during the day. Thankfully we had no problems with any bites. Recommend wearing long sleeves though, and long trousers when ashore.

Deet spray is possibly the best deterrent. One of the strongest is Lifesystems Exped 100 plus. You can buy it from Amazon :-

Use carefully, though, it's powerful stuff

Re: Maderia
Probably not that one, Emrobo, but there are varying strengths of deet products on the market. Some of the weaker ones may be OK but I don't actually know.

We were in Madiera in November and didn't encounter any mozzies - mind you we were smothered in Deet! The locals were very scathing about reports of Dengue fever-bearing mosquitoes, they said the problem had been hugely over-exaggerated by the media. Probably better to be safe than sorry, though.

I am a sucker (pardon the pun) for getting bitten, although on all cruises I have been on and our last two land holidays I don't seem to have been bitten (except Hungary). Kids have only been on one cruise (western Med, Spain and Hungary) and don't seem to have been bitten yet, but I always like to carry everything for them. The adult deet looks good though, may make a purchase of that
Always better to have it just incase

There is also an Avon product which is not actually advertised as an insect repellant but, according to reports is extremely effective. Have a look at the reviews on :-

Re: Maderia
Heard about the Avon product & people do say it works, how I don't know. My thoughts are use as high strength DEET based repellant as possible. Personally I never use anything much & seldom if ever get bitten,my theory is they concentrate on my wife! Never gave Mozzies a single thought in July in Madeira.

This is an ''ask an expert'' question about kids I would take proper advice.

Gin and tonic is another recommended repellant, JtD. Maybe that's why they avoid you

Oddly enough though, Romig, apparently it does work. Allegedly, the British Army use it ahead of any other product whenever mozzies are around.

I would comsider using a Jungle Formula Product, the following link says it is suitable for young children but always take advice from the experts .... be it Boots or your Doctor / Imunisation Nurse.

We used to use it when we went camping. I don't know whether it works but let's just say we didn't get bitten!! (Sorry there's a crossed post - I am talking about Avon Skin So Soft)
As for Madeira we have been twice and never come across any mozzies, not even in The Palace Gardens.

quineen in the tonic is what puts them off. We spend a lot of time in Portugal and I always buy the repelent from local chemists, works a treat. Also avoid wearing perfume/aftershave and deodorants.

We have had many stays on this beautiful Island and have never had a problem, maybe there is a mosquito season or they do not find Giant's appetising

Re: Maderia
We were in Madeira at the beginning of January and we saw / heard no mosquitoes. We kept an eye on the situation before we meant and according to internet reports, the number of cases has gone down considerably.
