Cartagena ~ Spain

Unread post by Susan1 »

This is our first port of call on Azura in July, never been here before what's to see?
After a few sea days we will be looking for somewhere to walk so no organised tours.
Looking forward to the suggestions ~ thanks Sue

We were there on Christmas Eve 2010; a pleasantly warm day.

We just wandered around taking in the atmosphere and enjoyed lunch ashore.

It has a lovely Roman Ampitheatre in the town (10 mins walk from the berth) and the town centre is mainly pedestrianised with some lovely little shops, cafes and tapas restaurants. A perfect place for a stroll around.

Thank you both ~ sounds just what we'll need after a few sea days.
Lunch ashore and possibly a cold spanish cerveza in the sun !

Cartagena in Spain is so clean and beautiful. Also, on the harbour front there is the first ever submarine on display. After passing through the arched walls into the main street look up towards the top of some of the first shops you will come to (on the left hand side as you enter). They have some unusual decorations. The ship docks right on the front as well. Only a few minutes slow stroll to the main town area. A lovely place to visit. Enjoy.

Unfortunately on the day we were there, it was a Public Holiday so there was very little open. We really liked the feel of the place, however, and it was very clean and a really nice place to walk around. The sightseeing bus was running (not a hop-on, hop-off) but I'll be honest, It wasn't that good. The ship docks right in the town so it's a great first port of call.

Having been to Cartegena twice we took a taxi from the stance beside the ship for a tour. 40 euro for the pair of us and the driver had a tape in English which fitted with the tour he gave.He took us to the top of the Ampitheatre and through a gate so we could look down on the site. This way we didnt have to pay the entry fee! He also showed a raised dias in the middle of the street which has a glass panel showing the original Roman road. We enjoyed the tour as my wife had just had a knee replcement and this gave her the tour without having to get on and off a coach. It is a nice town and easy to get around if able as most of the walking is on the flat.
We will be back in Cartegena this year on Azura A313N and are looking forward to the town.
